Unpopular opinion: I think this is the best Zao record front to back (not musically because it's all cheesy beatdown riffs...I just like it lol).

jk. I finally listened to this last night. Underwhelmed as always. The solo though is really nicely done, if you choose to not take that flute solo thing too seriously.

new APMD is predictably great. new Converge is predictably amazing. new Cannibal Corpse is predictably solid. new Winds of Plague is predictably garbage.

 

Man, I think I still have WoP’s debut on vinyl somewhere, that band did not age well

 

they're pretty much just Diet Bleeding Through (with more deathcore thrown in) another band who did not age well haha. so dorky.

 

Speaking of BT, I was listening to The Truth last night, so many memories. Still has some of the best album art out of that era in my opinion.

 

Still unironically enjoy Winds Of Plague. Well, perhaps somewhat ironically. The tough guy shit is impossible to take seriously.

Listen, I never claimed to have good taste.

 

I remember getting really into Decimate the Weak when it came out and then trying to get into their other albums but not caring about Winds of Plague at all after that. I may still give the new one a shot, but I'm not expecting much.

 

Doubling back on the subject of cornball power metal, I will never not love Elvenking. Their blend of power and folk and general fantasy charm gets me every time.

 

And speaking of fantasy, here we have an extremely good fantasy concept black/death album. Good shit.

 

Melodeath typically doesn't do much for me anymore these days, but man, this is good.

 

Jim Malone looking like Anderson Cooper or John Slattery now. WTF.

The pre-production tracks sound pretty solid though, I will say.

Their new album finally came out? Shit. That album was supposed to come out 5+ years ago on Sumerian. I saw them play a dive bar opening for Pathology back in 2009(?) when they were still touring on Our Cursed Rapture. Their vocalist's ability to switch between deep gutturals and high pitch screams was impressive. He also has a mustache that Inigo Montoya would be impressed by. I'll have to give it a listen.
