    I’m with you on playcount.
I don’t know how people can listen to something under 5 times and have an opinion. Especially with music this dense.

I guarantee you can listen to something once and know you don't like it

Idk, I hated to two of the albums in my top 10 for the year (so far) the first 2-3 times I heard them.

Took me about 15 listens to like the menzingers and prob 30 to like the home like no place

Glad I didn’t just go with my initial gut reaction. Love those bands now.

Prob being pedantic but when I said opinion, I was speaking towards something more nuanced than “I don’t like this”

There's a difference I think. Some albums I hated on my first listen (and later loved) but still went back to because there was something interesting about it, or it's an artist I know I love. But then there are other albums that on first listen there's nothing redeemable about it and I can just tell I'll never like it

Please go listen to the new Miley Cyrus album and try to tell me you need 4 more listens to decide if you like it

I can say I don’t like it. But I’d have a hard time telling you why besides saying it ain’t my thing.

Since we are on a circa specific thread and some have mentioned/implied listening to this less than 3 times in the 3 weeks it’s been out...I have trouble relating to their opinions because I don’t think it’s possible to digest something you intend on giving a real look when so little time has been devoted to listening and thinking about what you’ve listened to.

I assumed (maybe incorrectly) that when someone says something like “the ending of the amulet makes me emotional” that they’ve peeled back the layers of the song and found something that profoundly affects them.

I mean, I have only listened to it I think... 4(?) times, and every time I have had the same feelings towards it, I just don't like the album as much as, well, any other albums. VW took me a couple listens to get into, but I initially liked it more than this.

I guess we are just different, I know that I don't love this album and that's just a fact about me. I don't need to keep listening to the album again to know that

15+ listens just seems like a chore to me especially when it's an album I don't like. I'll only do that for a band I already know I love. Plus with all the albums I check out I don't got the time for that haha. Three listens is usually good enough when trying to decide.

You most certainly don’t and you shouldn’t if it doesn’t grab you enough to warrant the investment.

I just also wouldn’t spend any time on the album thread for an album I don’t like. Lol
Unless I was planning on spending some time learning from those who have listened a ton and taking that frame of reference to see if it can sway my opinion.

But like you said. We are just different.

Yeah I think that many listens only happens for me for bands I already know or have appreciated. Or for bands that people won’t STFU about and I feel like I’m missing something that more listens might dredge up

Also not trying to be a douche to anyone in here. Sorry if it came off that way.

    Everyone do you.

I adore this album and have listened prob 30 times or so.

To the album thread point, I wouldn't for a band that I don't typically like AND album I don't really like, but this is the current Circa thread so I'll hang in here for all things Circa.

My typical system is that I always listen to an album for the first time at home on my nice speakers, then a second listen on my work computer (normal speakers) and car stereo (solid system). I feel like those three scenarios is a fair test to really get a sense of what's going on

I think you’ll like just about anything if you listen to it enough, but even If you don’t think you can form a real opinion on a few listens, I think it’s fair to say you can absolutely predict what’s gonna take more time\listens to grow to like. And at that point it’s a chore and probably not worth it. Also depends on why you’re listening. If you’re trying to get into a new genre or it’s a band you normally like, probably more worth it than it would be for something else.

This may be because I’ve only relatively recently become a full album listener (compared to the average chorus user, I’d guess), but I’m kinda the opposite. If I don’t love a full right away or if it’s something I want to love (like the amulet), ill listen to individual tracks mostly and kinda use them as a gateway to the rest.

I could absolutely see someone having BSN as their fav and enjoying Descensus. Pretty sure one of my best friends' top 2 from Circa is BSN and Descensus.

I really think the newest album is closest to pre BSN work. Specifically the guitars.

Descensus seems very proggy and I’d say BSN is the farthest thing from that.

Clearly you could like any random albums form the discog as your favorite. I would just think logically the amulet and descensus wouldn’t scratch that BSN itch for me. Or at least how I classify th albums.

I still love Descensus and VW though, just less than previous
