Playing Illmatic for my kids today. Anyone have any favorite pieces of writing on the album?

 

It's so vivid. One Love always hits me the hardest, but it's a series of "letters". Illmatic is my favorite album of all time.

 

I'll be very interested to see how your students react to Illmatic.

 

Illmatic and The Chronic are what got me into hip hop.

Only first listened to Illmatic this year, actually. I loved it and should return to it.

I think it was Outkast that originally got me into hip-hop. Those who've never listened to ATLiens or Aquemini are missing out on some of the best albums ever recorded imo.

The Chronic was the album that really got me into hip hop. I was listening to radio rap/2 Pac prior, but when I heard the beat on Fuck Wit' Dre Day for the first time, shit got real.

 

I’m at the record store right now and they have the Illmatic vinyl but with the new whack cover. I’m sad.

 

Why is the Chronic so revered by people first getting into hip hop? I still find it bloated

 

Is it (ironically) the Eminem connection for a lot of white kids?

I think for me it was because growing up in California so the NWA/G funk era was so prevalent.

 

For me it just came out at the right time. I was 9 years old. The production is what really drew me in. I'd never heard anything like it. Then the lyrics (even though they went over my head) were kind of subversive for a child, so I might have also felt a little rebellious listening to it...

 

I think G-Funk has a easy listening quality that can attract newcomers.
