Why are we talking about Up All Night now? I was attempting to make a joke about +44 relative to Adam's Song and Every Time I Look for You. Some got it and laughed. Some didn't. That's cool too. Let's not get into a Divorce Court discussion about which member gets custody of the songs that feature both singers (some more than others). I am not looking to get into the whole Every Time I Look for You is Mark's song during the week and Tom's on the weekend, or that Up All Night is a week at one and a week with the other situation.

Not sure if anyone else has said it in this thread, but does a part of anyone else feel like BTD is pretty unoriginal from a Blink perspective? As if they wanted to do an album that sounded like old Blink and not try to grow or experiment. I'm not siding with Tom, as perhaps he wanted to take Blink too far away from roots, but surely they've grown more as musicians than BTD lets on. Obviously the album isn't out so it'd be insane to judge it, but I hope there are songs on there that I want to re-visit in a decade, rather than an album that perhaps I enjoy and then forget about a month or two later.

Sure, BTD isn't anything groundbreaking, but they needed a one-two punch to reel their fans back in after a few missteps.

I mean, I kind of agree, but I don't think it's their job to necessarily create something that aligns with my current tastes. I would absolutely kill for something resembling untitled, but it seems like a lot of Blink fans want an album more closely resembling Dude Ranch/Enema. I'm not sure I'm their demographic, and while I'm super stoked on the album, I think I'll enjoy it like I enjoy Yellowcard's newest stuff: fun music to listen to on a warm Californian day, or when I'm driving to the beach with my friends.

It's not going to be The Hotelier, or any other contemporary band that does a lot of experimentation. I'm guessing we're going to get a straight pop-punk album. It'll be awesome, but I doubt it'll be innovative.

Oh agreed, and I wasn't intending to suggest that it was the fans' tastes they would be catering to. More that surely, as musicians, they would want to try new sounds, and make music more influenced by their current tastes. I know Mark is a big fan of new music and a variety of genres, but the new song might suggest otherwise. BTD sounds to me like a song that wants to be like the old material, and was written with previous material in mind, rather than writing something fresh.

Not everything has to be innovative or "groundbreaking". Sometimes I just want some kick-ass songs that make me feel good that I'm gonna wanna come back to and replay over and over again for years to come.

True that. "Up All Night" was innovative for blink and something that hadn't done before, but "Bored to Death" really isn't.... Guess which one I played on repeat a million times the day it came out?

I used to think I wanted an extension of the Untitled experimentation, but after playing BTD a bunch of times, I think I'm totally okay with the direction they're going in. It's exactly what I didn't know I wanted from them.

Someone I know bought tickets on StubHub already... She said that customer service said that they were employees who got tickets who sold them already. I'm not sure I believe that and it doesn't seem worth it to me to test my luck. I'd rather wait for the presale to see what I can get.

I just need my code to come in!

Definitely. I'm closing in on 200 plays already of Bored to Death. Although, to be far, I also played Up All Night a million times when it first came out, but I definitely like Bored to Death more.

  17. Once you toss in the "Blink perspective" part I have to point out that much of what Blink's entire catalog is is not very original. Even large portions of their most "original" album (Untitled) really, when you pull it apart, and look at it it critically are not really that "original." I think looking to Blink-182 for originality in music is going to leave someone pretty disappointed given their 20 year career. However, I would not say that originality needs to be tied to growth - one can grow as an artist and it not need to be "original." I think Mark's bridge is a good example here of songwriting growth.

And I am probably in the minority here, but I'll flat out say I want an album I enjoy. I haven't really enjoyed a Blink-182 album in over a decade now. I would love to just enjoy Blink-182 again. I think I turn back to Enema, and an album that has "Happy Holidays" and "Online Songs" and "First Date" on it because I enjoy it. To me that feeling of carefreeness is what brings me back to their music. To me they're not putting albums out like Noah Gundersen or Bon Iver or Brand New that I hold up as "look at this work of art!" — that's just not what this band ever was to me or what I think their albums represent. I like having multiple artists in my quiver I can turn to. Not all have to be the same or even scratch the same itch.

I don't think being innovative or reinventing the pop-punk wheel was part of their agenda here. It was to be the band they've wanted to be ever since the reunion.

Absolutely. Don't get me wrong, it would be awesome if blink came out with a groundbreaking, innovative album at this point in their career, but at the end of the day, I just want an album that I'm gonna enjoy and play the hell out of.

The second half of this. All day. Blink has never been original. They haven't really changed or evolved. But I haven't ENJOYED them in forever. Frankly, I hated Neighborhoods aside from 1-2 songs. But it's the enjoyment I miss most. I got into Blink the first time I saw how much fun they were having on stage and in doing what they love. That has been missing for a long time for me. I loved the untitled record, but they don't need to change to grow. It's the same regarding New Found Glory for me. Same stuff, different day, but I enjoy it.

But you may still hate it once the record is released. I have HUGE hopes for Hoppus/Skiba though two of my favourites.

(Haven't dug through this thread much, so sorry if you're having to repeat yourselves, but) Those of you saying it doesn't sound like blink, how so? I don't even know if anyone here is saying that, I'm just curious at this point. Jason just touched on it, but outside of Untitled, they wrote pop-punk/rock. They aren't super innovative or complex. Enema and TOYPAJ are great pop punk/rock records. BTD is absolutely a great, catchy, pop-punk song. I guess I just don't understand the whole "it doesn't sound like blink" statements, aside from not having Tom's vocals. Unless I've just been listening to the wrong band this whole time or something.

If you ordered the pre-sale bundle off the web site you were supposed to get a pre-sale ticket unique code within 24 hours and none of us have gotten them yet.
