    I see what you're saying. As a 27 year old I certainly wouldn't be writing lyrics such as those, but you can't deny the effect they had on their target market.

    What you're saying is the opposite of them being "forced", moreso natural maturity

    Things have changed.

    Yep. There was also the major personal strain of Box Car Racer and the fallout it caused. Tom was loaded on painkillers as well. I don't think the leap in subject matter is that surprising.

    Let's all take a moment to appreciate how much stronger "Bored to Death" is as a track compared to the other most recent blink released songs.. (disaster, dogs eating dogs etc). I think it's safe to say they managed to create a little bit of magic again, and it was missing for a long time. I mean really the whole DED ep was just so sloppy, from the album cover, to the production, to the songs. It's so refreshing seeing a focused, committed incarnation of blink 182 again.

  5. The funny thing is that when I was in middle school and high school, my friends and I were all about blink and we were all suburban middle class. I knew some "punk" kids from other schools who were really into rancid, the misfits, stuff like that, and they all talked shit on blink for being fake or whatever. So Tom writing songs to appeal to punk kids...I don't know how necessary that was

    I don't think they were trying to appeal to their fan base...I think for them being in their late 20s isn't a stretch for that kind of lyrical content especially when you consider their lifestyle. Basically they were still boys in men's bodies and writing those kinds of lyrics wouldn't be forced

    Nah I mean I ate it up as an 11 year old, I just can't help by side-eye them for writing songs like that. Comes across as a cash grab to attract younger fans

    I genuinely believe that it wasn't, but I see your point.

  10. Also, talking about their ages makes me appreciate Dude Ranch SO MUCH MORE.

    Mark = 25
    Tom = 22
    Scott = 19

    I'm flailing now.

    I am saying life changes force us to rethink who we are and our impact on those around us, so I am sure that impacted their lyrics.

    I'll never understand why just because someone is in their 40's or whatever, that they can't write fun, youthful songs that people can relate to. Mark said it best in that new article today. The angst in their songs are universal and can apply to everyday life, not just high school.

  13. Pretty curious to see the ages of people that show up for the tour later this year. I'm sure plenty of kids will still be there.

    I'm hoping that they can attract the next generation to this tour. I want to see blink continue to be successful and carry on for years and years to come, not just fizzle out one day.

    I'm flailing now.

    I went to the S/T 10 year anniversary show and there were a lot of kids there, and also a good amount like myself.

    Yeah but they're like, specifically referencing high school and how jocks suck when they're in their mid to late 20s. You can have angst and voice it in a way that doesn't sound like the scribblings of a 7th grader

    The change that came with Untitled seemed to be more influenced by similar successful records coming out in 2003 rather than things going on in their personal lives. That's what I meant by, "forced." Sorry for the confusion.

    I mean you can also take a look at something like Dude Ranch or even Buddah/Cheshire and see that they were singing about being unhappy and rebellious without pandering. They were silly songs that showcased their juvinile sense of humor but they seemed to be age-appropriate to the people writing them, for the most part

  19. But then again, you have FUCT coming out in 2005 and bands like All Time Low taking off shortly after, so there was still appetite for more standard pop punk.

    You're specifically referring to just Give Me One Good Reason though (I'm assuming). The large majority of their catalogue is still very universal and relatable imo. Songs like Dammit and What's My Age Again and hell, pretty much all of Dude Ranch is completely timeless and the younger generation deserves to experience those just as much as we did.

    Yeah, my posts are based on TOYPAJ in general. Even them writing "Going Away To College" as adults doesn't really bother me, it gave off a nostalgic vibe.

    Wait? How old?! Saw them live in February, it was a very cool moment.

    Yea, I'll agree with you there. TOYPAJ has some of their worst lyrics, but I think it worked for them at the time. It was extremely relatable to all of us when we were 13 or 14 years old. Songs like Stay Together, Please Take Me Home, and Everytime I look for you hold up really well to this day from that album.
