I guess I'm just incredibly behind when it comes to the "scene" but is A Day to Remember really bigger than All Time Low? That's surprising to me, I would think more people know ATL

Haven't read anything from the last few pages, but I wasn't a fan of this song at all. I know they've never been like a "lyrics" band, but I couldn't connect to them at all.

I don't know if I've ever tried to connect to the lyrics to a Blink song in my life.

Some are fine, most are clumsy. TOYPAJ especially, in my opinion, even though I still love the record

Yeah, I think more people in the general public probably have heard of ADTR. (Though I much prefer ATL)

Also agreed that Blink is not the band I listen to to connect with lyrics haha

Idk I connect with a lot of blink lyrics, especially Untitled onwards

Yup. Kind of a futile effort, these guys aren't really poets. Even the stuff off of untitled is pretty laughable. Sounds like that kid in HS who tried to too hard to come off artsy.

  9. Made it through their entire discography today. It's interesting what holds up to me, what doesn't, and more than anything just how much I've heard every single album. I could barely make it through Untitled, surprisingly, just because I've heard that album so many times over the years. Like just ... holy shit, it's been overplayed. By the time I get to Neighborhoods and DED I'm really tired of Tom voice. I'm ready for anything else. Haha. I think more than anything after a discography run through I realize I don't listen to them as much anymore not because I don't like the albums, but because I've basically got them all memorized and they've just been played, literally, into my brain at this point.

Other thoughts: Cheshire has "Wasting Time" which was the first "oh my god that's so clever" moment I remember in a song. That was an AIM away message for years. Dude Ranch remains just awesome. Enema is one helluva a great pop-punk album. TOYPAJ is probably the most consistent album front to back - sneaky underrated. Untitled is great, but man, I am ok not hearing it again for another few years - especially by the back-half. Also Mark is underused. That carries into Neighborhoods, which really isn't that bad of an album, but I wish they told Tom to stfu more on that one. I really don't like the EP very much. Kinda just ... meh.

"Bored to Death" still feels very fresh to me. I hope I'm lucky enough to be kinda "sick of" this new album in 20 years because I've played it over and over again. Gotta try not to wear the song out now.

(If I like this album as much as I like the +44 album I'll be completely 100% happy and think it's the best Blink-182 album in way over a decade.)

I'll be that guy and say I always thought TOYP was kind of overrated. I think I only like it more than Neighborhoods and Cheshire Cat. (still love it but it falls off in the back half for me, I don't like Shut Up or Give Me One Good Reason that much)

TOYPAJ took a long time for me to enjoy but it's a solid album. I'd even give it the edge over untitled.

Man, I totally agree with so much of this. the bolded stuff is like...exactly my thoughts on those few albums.

Also, your last sentence in the first paragraph is kinda how I feel about Green Day. I still like them and haven't grown out of them, but I feel I've just overplayed all their releases (well, except for the trilogy).

At this point I'd say TOYPAJ is the best Blink album, and Enema isn't too far behind.

I adore Untitled, it changed music forever for me and even though I also have it completely memorized I still listen to it every couple months and just marvel at all the little things they did, a lot of which I'm sure goes back to Jerry Finn, but man there are just so many little touches and flourishes on songs on that album that are super fun to listen to with a great audio setup. He was just as good on TOYPAJ and Enema, but untitled just does some interesting, interesting stuff. I probably feel a lot like Enema how you feel about Untitled, I can't really listen to that album front to back anymore and only really revisit "Going Away to College".

Did you listen to Box Car Racer? I think that and +44 are the best non-blink things Mark or Tom did by far (though I guess since most of the rest is Angels albums, that's not saying a whole lot)

I don't like the BCR or +44 albums. Don't like +44 because I don't like Mark's voice enough to sustain an entire album, and I just don't think the BCR songs are very well written.

People frequently say Blink has never been a "lyrical band," and I agree. They're a band that, in my opinion, has always spoken through their production and how they sound. With that being said, I seemingly notice something brand new every time I listen to Untitled, and that's why it's my favorite record of theirs. It's pop punk how it has never sounded before, or ever will.

(just for the record, I think Mark's lyrics have almost always been very thoughtful and great)

    Exactly.

  18. BCR is amazing.

  19. Hah, yeah, I love so many things about what they do with it, but I swear I could write that album in my sleep right now, if we ever lose it, and it's wiped out like OG Star Wars, I could HARMY the shit out of that and give us it back. Hahaha.

Still, Mark deserved a little more vocal work on those last three albums. Too much Tom.

I did. The best parts are Travis. Controversial opinion coming in: I really don't think it holds up as well as a lot of people give it credit for. Some good songs, but it feels so much like a tracing of the music Tom wanted to create. Very reactionary to what he saw people saying about Blink, and I really don't think the songs are very strong as a whole. Strong parts in a few, percussion is great, a few interesting choruses and melodies, but listening to it I think it really solidifies my opinion: I like Mark without Tom so much more than I like Tom without Mark. I would 100% agree it's better than all those AvA albums. "There is" and "Elevator" are really good. I still like "Tiny Voices" if I ignore the lyrics. "I Feel So" and so many others ... just ... man, it's what "Feeling This" would be without Mark's chorus — which is not good. Haha. I need smaller doses of Tom, peppered in, used to break songs up, used as call and return, and then a few where he really shines. But back to back to back to me can be a lot to take in. Any ranking I did of Blink albums would be so incredibly overemphasized on my personal history that it's too hard to really do — albums I think are objectively better in every way still don't hold up to Dude Ranch for me. That album shaped my life before I could drive, it just has this hold on me. Literally every song means something to me in some way, from screen names I had to jokes I made, to times I cranked it to get over life, parents, girls, dudes, friends, everything. I can't think of a more influential album to me. 1997, I think I owned like 4 CDs that whole year, and one ended up being a TAPE I made of Cheshire Cat that I borrowed from a friend's older brother who somehow had the old album before it got a more wide pressing (and I begged my mom for it). There's something about literally having 4 albums or so to play for like 12 months when you're 14 for the connection you make with that music compared to the fact that my Apple Music subscription and the internet gives me everything. I think I can say with certainty I'll never have that kind of relationship with an album again. Kinda crazy.

Sorry I went on a rant there way past what you asked. Brain dump.

AvA is pretty mediocre overall, to be sure, but I-Empire is a fantastic album. I'd put that over several Blink albums.

I don't know about anyone else, but the lyric "I think I met her at the minute that the rhythm was set down, I said I'm sorry I'm a bit of a letdown" has been stuck in my head since I first heard BTD. There's something about that vocal melody that I adore.
