I agree with the second interpretation more than the first.
Given that the song is ostensibly about his wife/love ones & the idea that wherever he goes in the afterlife, it could never be considered a "heaven" without his wife & loved ones being there, I tend the think the imagery is meant to depict people singing in general about his loved ones.

The question of WHAT they are singing is up to you. Perhaps they are singing Brand New songs and Jesse is trying to make a point that all of the strife he went through with the band's career were figuratively about his wife because he had to go through all of that in order to get to where he is today. It's a bit of a stretch, but you could make this argument.

Either way, I dig the call back of all this imagery to Luca and the lyric of "all of the songs were about you" to the lyric in their song the "The Shower Scene". Such a neat way to link back to their first track on an official LP.

 

I sort of think of that line as a way of saying that, in a sense, Jesse was always singing about his wife and children because, much like @Serenity Now suggested, he had to go through all those years of doubt and depression to get to where he is today. He was always looking for her/his kids, in every part of his life.

Lucky! I actually think this festival has tons of great bands i would want to see. Make sure you catch Pup's set. Crazy that they were playing in Hamilton yesterday and Cali today. Those dudes rule.

 

I'm feeling so lazy though. Still in bed. Don't want to get up. Don't want to drive. Don't want to watch a bunch of bands before Brand New. Do want beer.
