I truly don't get it. Someone is upset because they've been "woke" longer than others here and feel like the others who are now aware these things are wrong are bandwagoners? Isn't the whole point of social justice to teach others and help them learn and grow? Why is that a negative thing when it happens? Because some ppl didn't call it out 15 years ago they can't now? Idek why I'm trying to get it cause it makes no sense but I'm just so confused lol. It reads like "I'm superior cause I knew this was wrong for longer than u"

It'll never make sense because it's a fallacy, it's not that they want to discredit someone for not speaking out a decade ago, they don't want anyone to speak out against this at all.

The argument isn't "you should've spoken about this years ago!", it's always just "you didn't call this out before, don't call this out now."

Gotta say - that person did clearly state they were intersex in literally the second sentence of their first post, so if we have misgendered them by calling them "dude" then perhaps we do owe them an apology for that? IDK, I'm not even sure about anything anymore...

I have been acting under the impression that "dude" stopped being gender specific in like the mid 90s or early 00s?

Or maybe that is just a regional thing? But I see it now more commonly used as a sign of familiarity regardless of gender.

I've been alive for 35 years and have never heard anyone other than a male refered to as dude. Maybe it is a regional thing

Both sides of this argument are acting childish at this point, this thread has gotten out of hand.

ehhhhhh i mean i use dude as not gender specific but if someone said they weren't comfortable with that i would change that. i can see it being triggering to transwomen and if asked to not i will gladly change my wording

    "guys" as well

This is me. I use "dude" and "guys" a ton and toward everyone, but if someone asked me to stop, I would without hesitation. I feel like they've become a lot less gendered, but can still see why someone may not like it.

That's not what my argument is or ever was.
You're projecting your experience with others onto me. That has nothing to do with me.

You're 100% free to do anything you want to do and it's never, ever about now/then. We live in the now.
For the people who've dealt with this, cool. For the ones who havn't, maybe you should do so instead of JUST applying it to new bands while also saying they suck. I've even seen people do that in rape allegations. Scottle, I never ever said that, ever. You're fabricating that claim. I don't like the band, I don't like the song, I don't like the lyrics and I'd never support a band who does anything remotely close to that. How can you not understand that?

And I'm not bragging about my degree. I'm just mentioning it so that i'm not needlessly shat upon because none of us really know eachother. I mean, that obviously still happened, but it's obvious that a lot of people on here assumes everyone's a straight, white, dude and I said it in the context of Jason preparing himself by claiming there was only one type of person who'd ever have any critique of him. That's not true.

Anyways, I only logged in to say thanks to PandaBear. Thank you. Thanks Tata as well.
Also, looking at the history of Incognito Jones, they only refer to males when saying dudes and has been ignoring this aspect since it was said. Even right after, " 20 year old dude about a teenager". Dude, teenager.

You can quickly do a google search and find that your personal experience is not the only one.

I even said that it might be a regional thing.

Plenty of people do use the term as one of endearment / familiarity regardless of gender.

According to google there was even an article in Cosmo, in 2012, stating as much.

    Cosmo!

Language is becoming more fluid. And people, especially here, are genuinely trying to be respectful of others. I have no doubt that @incognitojones was not trying to be disrespectful in that way when he used a word that has become less gender specific over time. That could have been cleared up very easily. But that is not what happened.

Quoting you just to say... I wish that when I was 14, I had people I looked up to and respected to tell me that some of those Say Anything and Saves The Day lyrics were trash and explain why. Could've grown as a person a lot earlier.

" 20 year old dude about a teenager" was said right after. Dude, teenager.
    Been ignoring it since.

Yeah, it could've been cleared up, Jones did not.
