This is definitely worse than a lot of the stuff we listened to 15 years ago, right? i don't remember brand new or even taking back Sunday calling anyone these offensive slurs. I think they may have had a few bitter lines here and there but these lyrics are just atrociously nasty.

It's definitely more on the nose. As @scottlechowicz said, it's more of the effect that bands such as blink/FoB have had and why it's important to try and stop this shit in its tracks

Yea I forget that blink has some lyrics like that. Glad they grew up. lol I still feel that even at their worst they weren't as disrespectful as this band. I agree these types of lyrics need to stop now, there are ways of expressing being cheated on that don't involve using such misogynistic language. I still need to read this whole thread so sorry if that topic had already been dealt with.

you're in a cult, call your dad

The world has changed too much to let little kids have voices for this sort of thing. These dudes are clearly super young and it's a shame that someone didn't stop them sooner.

Also, this song really is awful, hahahaha

I think the sadder part is you look at the replies on twitter and it is young teenage girls saying how much they love the song.

The whole song is just gross to me - "you're secrets aren't safe with me" - maybe I am just reading too much into it, but doesn't that not seem like some kind of threat of revenge porn / sharing nudes?

When you go back and listen to Enema there is some pretty bad stuff . TOYPAJ is a little better - I mean What Went Wrong basically conveys the same amount of anger / sadness / confusion as this song without resorting to misogynistic lyrics.

Sometimes I wonder if that is why Tom didn't seem so into performing the older stuff anymore - after writing two concept albums about the meaning of Love, and all of the maturity of Untitled and the later stuff, it has to feel pretty gross to get on stage and sing "I need a girl that I can train" and "you're mom's a w---e"

You have not read my posts, yet you choose to comment on them. If you read them, you'd know I don't personally think these lyrics are ok, so I chos to not call myself a fan of Blink 182, Brand New, Bayside, Say Anything, Senses Fail and all the other ap.net stalwarts who've done this at some point in their career. It's just not what I want out of music, but I wouldn't shame anyone else for choosing to listen to it. It becomes a bit dicey when you're ok with 50% of the music you're into having done it at some point but you call out a new band for it. And by dicey I just mean that I think the person should be aware of it, so they can deal with that fact the way they please.

I never said it's ok, but the majority of YOU have at one point, you're just deciding to not do it now "because it's 2017". Deal with things.

It doesn't not add just because you say it doesn't. It absolutely adds to the dialogue, no matter if you think it does or not.
My take on it relates to Jason's behaviour. You don't have to get involved in that if you don't agree.

Again, you keep doing this thing where you say I add nothing, then you talk about the topic overall and ask me a question. I think it's disgusting and I've always thought so when all your favorite bands did it, so i either distanced myself or accepted that I support that message/behaviour. But you need to be consistent and actually do that per situation. I'm not saying that your choice has to be consistent, that's up to you, but you need to make one, and if you don't make one; Then you're supporting and enabling it by default.

It didn't fly in 2002 either, this "2017" thing is absolutely ridiculous. I'm not an amazing human being at all, if _I_ can be consistent; you can as well. My believes in 2017 are honestly only a bit more wary because of how much some people gang up on others and don't seem to think for themselves.

Well, isn't that a personal attack and the "fallacy fallacy", nice to meet you two again.
My point is that a lot of you are complicit in supporting this before, and continue to be, but you cherrypick and ignore others. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, it's a lot of work to be consistent; But I'd like you to be aware of it.

Of course I don't and I never pretended I did. Why would anyone ever do that?

Ok, let me answer that question then; I never said they were ok, so I can't teach you why they're ok. That was as far away from my point as you can possibly get. I already said it's not ok, no matter who does it, be it blink 182, brand new, bayside, senses fail and countless others. This new band started they same way they did.

You didn't read the thread then my dude, especially the most liked post, which basically states that this exists because we didn't call it out fifteen years ago, and it will exist in fifteen years if we don't try to stop it now.

We just don't want this blatant sexism and misogyny ruuning rampant throughout our music, if a band does a shitty thing or releases a shitty song they will be called out for it. This is what we need. As I said earlier, pop punk is going to be hard to change because we know what it can be like, but it can happen. If you don't want to try make it better, then seeya.

The thing is that a lot of us have recognized that when our "favorite bands" did it, it was wrong. We talk about it all of the time, go read the science fiction thread you'll see a ton of us talking about it. Also a lot of our favorite bands never wrote stuff as bad as this. If I had heard these lyrics in high school I would not have liked them, they are very odd putting. Brand new occasionally had a line "hope you choke and die", but that song wasn't really about a girl. The Jude law line is really bad, but there still isn't the name calling you get in this song.

"remember kids, try to get worse as time goes on, don't learn, don't change, definitely don't correct past mistakes. Doing as little as possible and caring about nothing is the only thing that matters. so if you see anyone trying to make anyone else better, belittle them until they give up and decide that world is awful no matter what and any progress is futile. America."

I wouldn't go into the "x isn't as bad y" territory with stuff like this, it kind of undermines the point. The argument isn't that the shitty Brand New lyrics aren't as shitty, its that the younger version of yourself didn't recognize the problem. If a band with those shitty lyrics came out this year they should be called out as well, and its good that we're looking back and talking about how fucked up they are, better late than never. There may be levels but it doesn't really matter, its all misogyny, its all a problem.

And the Fall Out Boy stuff especially, those violent lyrics were written by a 20 year old dude about a teenager, the predatory aspects there really highlight how the problems are never confined to being "just a song", this shit is how people really feel and can have serious real world impacts, especially in a scene with a lot of underage female fans that get subjected to this violence.
