    People always say that third wave stuff isn't real emo bc it doesn't sound like anything from the 90s emo: but 90s emo doesn't sound anything like 80s emo either. They don't need to sound exactly similar if they are grouped in the same subgenre. Also I'm probably concussed so I get a free pass today.

    That guitar chug on 451 right after he says "repeat 60 cycle delay" in conjunction with his whispered "hey" is so fucking groovy

    i think emo bands lead with a certain vibe or sense of theme, be it lyrically or musically, that Brand New absolutely does not. Is it bad to call a band emo? Not inherently (though genres are stupid and we should phase them out), but I think it does an utter disservice to the gamut that Brand New runs on any given record.

    bc at the same time every band is emo y'know?

    It should "match" those files and actually upload the others to the cloud since iTunes doesn't have a copy of them

    Why do we need the term emo? How did it survive as a genre name after Ian MacKaye denounced it in 1986? What's wrong with hardcore punk, post-hardcore, pop-punk and indie rock? What actual emo band in history has ever classified themselves as emo, until the "revival" bandcamp emo bands (complete jabronis) of the late 2000s/early 2010s?

    Some of those "complete jabronis" of the late 2000s/early 2010s are better than some highly revered 90s emo bands.

    Wow people get up in arms over emo. Look I grew up on 90s emo. I'd consider Deja an emo record personally. Also while I don't think they are emo anymore. I do love UPROXX calling this the emo Abbey Road.

    Now I went to mow my dads lawn today and was picking out something to listen to. I tried so hard to find something other than this... but I didn't and listened to it for the billionth time

    That higher register "judge you by your thoughts!" refrain by Jesse at the end of the fish line is just the right amount of emo seasoning to bring all the angsty flavors out.

    okay boys and girls, here's a fun post...

    looked into how many times water, or things that make you think of water or connect with water are mentioned in Brand New's discography and holy shit they touch on this topic a lot - along with some other themes.

    Overall numbers:
    * Your Favorite Weapon - 8 references
    * Deja Entendu - 13 references and an entire song ("Play Crack the Sky")
    * The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me - 14 references
    * Leaked Demos - 4 references (note: only looked at the six songs remaining on Leaked Demos that didn't get redone for TDAG)
    * Daisy - 9 references
    * Science Fiction - 16 references and an entire song ("In the Water")

    Think that equals 66, plus two songs. 75 if I include the songs below.

    Then single-song releases:
    "(Fork and Knife)" - 0 references
    "I am a Nightmare" - 1 reference
    "Mene" - 3 references
    "Moshi Moshi" - 2 references
    "Sealed to Me" - 1 reference
    "My Nine Rides Shotgun" - 0 references
    "Out of Range" - 0 references

    What I counted as a references could be words such as: water, drowning, ship, lake, river, rain, etc. to cities or types of land that are surrounded by bodies of water, birds, ships, storms, etc.

    Other common themes Brand New touch upon: god, religion, fires, forests, stones, beds.

    If people want I can post the actual list out of each reference per song / album, but figured that would be a huge fucking post and it might be fun to go find them yourselves.

    @Jason Tate thought you might find this kind of neat.

    that and read through their lyrics online for some songs where i didn't happen to catch it on play-throughs. the amount on SF is what got me thinking about it and then some other songs popped up so i wondered as a whole how many there were.

    They're a band that really can't be generalized, and that's the real issue I don't think think some catch. Some songs have heavy emo influence. Early stuff was borderline pop punk. I just call them a rock band.
