For people that have been around since the beginning, when did this band get the rabid fan base they have? I imagine in YFW days people wouldn't have mailed their blood to the band or trespassed to old abandon towers looking around for a cassette

 

I've heard that album. I thought it was their usual sound and I was shocked ha. Some are upset that their next tour will be rare front to back. The last track on hyperview is amazing though

 

Fan since 2001. Just typed out an answer to this and erased it. I can only say that it was all at once but also crazy gradual. Hard to wrap the head around.

TDAG and Daisy are both emo albums

 

Don't assume their genre

 

yeah like @Drewski just said, it is kind of a weird gradual thing. however, i definitely believe TDAG was like the cementing of their cult following and then the post Daisy 8 year wait did a lot of weird things to this fanbase. i think the band dropping out of interviews / major press coverage had this weird chemical reaction with the fan base becoming really cult following-ish and it was at this perfect time where all the stars aligned and next thing you know this band is low key one of the biggest bands on earth.


i dont expect any of that to make sense.

You act like Emo has just one distinct sound.

Does My Chemical Romance sound like Taking Back Sunday? No.

 

To be fair I wouldn't classify either of those bands as emo either

 

I think TDAG was as much of a break from Brand New's emo sound as Kid A was a break from The Bends' and Ok Computer's alt rock. But then again I don't really care that much about the emo semantics. Either way I love the progression.

 

My Chemical Romance is not emo

We need to create a word for bands that are what the general public call "emo" but not actually "emo"

 

There's a word for it, it's called third wave emo

 

And those who say well it sounds nothing like second wave ...

Second wave sounds NOTHING like first wave and 4th wave is somewhere between 2nd and third

 

I think it's dumb to try to assign specific labels like this

That said Blake has a surprisingly good point. Who ever said two things in the same genre even have to sound that similar?
