Same Logic is okay but it's not my favorite. I love that part where he goes super low vocally.

137 is great. Really great. I've listened to it a few times in a row. The chorus is incredibly infectious and the outro is fucking beautifully heavy.

Your post has made me put 10,000 days on now, I feel that albums seriously underrated.

It is. There is some great stuff on 10,000 days. The title track is fucking awesome and, before the days where you can buy individual tracks, was worth the price of the full album when I was younger.

Look out for In the Water. It's my favorite track on the album

10,000 Days is great but there is soooo much filler on it

Heh, I got torn the fuck apart a while back for suggesting that the writing on Deja is juvenile. Glad it's not just me.

The National are fine but other than TWFM I haven't spent much time with their albums

Radiohead are great but I don't have much of a personal connection to any of their music

Tool does nothing for me, ditto for 3EB

    Scott Pilgrim sucks.

This is still what I'm struggling with. I've only listened to it once and thought it was fine. It's not like I went in trying to dislike it, but the hyperbole made it impossible not to have something of a negative predisposition towards it.

I mean, with stuff like, "hope you come down with something they cant diagnose, dont have the cure for" it's pretty much undeniable. With that said, I do think they kind of capture what it's like be in high school and dealing with early relationships and emotions, but they weren't in high school when those songs came out lol. However, the lyrics aren't why I don't like Deja that much, I'm just not a fan of the music.

Same. I'd have a much higher opinion of the band if you took away those first two albums - which is weird because I can just ignore them and not listen to them anyway, but whatever.

The day the new album came out, I popped into the album thread (it was moving at like 20 posts per minute lol) to say that I was only there to watch the crazy overreactions. Several people quoted me within minutes, saying it was the by far best thing that the band had ever done, etc. They couldn't have possibly even listened to the whole album in that period of time.

Yeah, it's frustrating. I even saw posts calling it the best album of all time. Even though I'm sure those posts were joking and intentionally hyperbolic, it's still dumb

I can't believe the same band that put out Science Fiction put out Deja. I don't like that album at ALL.

    Their newest really impressed me.

I just ignore them. Your Favorite Weapon doesn't even exist to me. TDAG onward has solidified them as one of my favorite bands but their early work doesn't cut it for me. Also, seeing them live multiple times has really elevated their music for me.

I think if I hadn't gone into the band having read sooo many posts about how Deja was a life changing album, I would have reacted totally differently. TDAG receives the same sort of praise, but I get that more. Having huge expectations for Deja and then not understanding the hype at all definitely caused my personal backlash against the band

deja isn't that good, doesn't hold up. it's catchy alt rock songs, about it. devil and god is excellent, deja and daisy are all fine to good with very different flaws, and the new one is excellent as well

I still really enjoy Deja and think it's a great album, although I can certainly recognize it's flaws. For one thing, I don't think Jesse really demonstrated his prowess as a lyricist until TDAG. I'd say Deja is about 25% nostalgia for me at this point, which still leaves most of it to just being a really good album.

It is, however, a full notch below TDAG/Daisy/SciFi.

Deja absolutely holds up, you dorks were just too young when it came out/too old when you got into it

To be fair, that's my exact opinion for Dude Ranch as well except Deja is a much better album

so doesn't that mean it's the nostalgia that holds it up and not the actual content of the album?

No, I still think it's a very good album. Well written, melodic, way different than what 99.9% of bands in the scene were putting out at the time. The act of getting into it way later than everyone else means that you've seen everything that has come after it, influenced by it, along with the hype of that initial album, so you're jaded as to what the record should be.

I'd say that the albums that are considered highly influential that hold up as absolutely mindblowing to this day are few and far between. I remember hearing Pet Sounds in high school and immediately going "so what". I still have a hard time finding true "brilliance" in a lot of the Beatles records, for instance. I respect them, sure, but only one or two has really blown me away. That's not to knock the quality of the record, just to show that so much of modern popular music has come from the roots planted by that album, it's no longer mindblowing or impressive.
