Yea, there's no way of knowing. These guys probably create things all the time. Its quite probable there's something on here older than Daisy.

Does anyone know what they've actually been doing in the downtime for 8 years? I know it would be nice to spend time with family and such but for me one family BBQ and I'm already sick of mine lol Do they work side jobs between the album cycles? They just stay very private and away from social media so I wonder what they do in the downtime, Vin is my biggest guitar inspiration it would be cool to see him active on social media but I do respect them keeping their privacy as I have since day.

the samples on this are fucking unnerving to say the least. there's definitely a southern gothic vibe to this record.

Finally getting my first full listen to this. Lit Me Up is very eerie.

The lyrics/story on Desert. Holy shit.

(Going through my second play through now while reading the lyrics.)

I mean... those songs rule. They're fantastic in a playlist of BN songs.

They don't fit on this album. But they're great songs.

After listening to this all night, I think this is my favorite Brand New record. I honestly think they got better with each release. My ranking would just be: Science Fiction > Daisy > The Devil and God > Deja Entendu > Your Favorite Weapon. Pretty crazy that it went from, "there will never be a Brand New album", to "Brand New in October" to I'm listening to a new album in August.

I am a little hungover, but feeling pretty emotional that this is a real thing. We have a new Brand New album ladies and gents.....8years......8years, finally.

    On my 4th listen.

The recording of the Sermon reference to Daisy at the end of 'In The Water', so fucking awesome...and works perfectly going into the next track("Desert") given that it's a song about a religious conservative father.

Curious about the "7 years, 7 years, 7 years" part they added in at the end, cause it's been about 7-8 years since they released that Daisy song that it's referencing....kind of interesting. Wonder if the songs, or the subject matter or characters, are linked or something

    We are exact opposites.

I think Brand New got worse (use that term lightly though) with every album until this new one.

That being said, every album except Daisy is a masterpiece.

I personally think the 7 refers to Daisy. Technically it's been 8 years but I'm just guessing it was a song completed last year.

I just listened to this laying out in my hammock in my backyard. It was a clear night - as many stars were out as there can be in the suburbs - but also there were some scattered low hanging clouds. A little chilly for an August night (which is preferable to me), with a steady breeze. The clouds were moving fast, and not to sound over dramatic, but I felt like I could feel the world spinning. Just as the music started to play after the intro, a gust of wind came by. About half way through Batter Up, the scattered clouds turned to one massive cloud that covered the sky (and had no end in sight when I went inside). It was like the sky itself knew that I was listening to (presumably) the final notes of Brand New's career and was closing the curtain.

I hope that doesn't sound too over the top, but I couldn't think of a more beautiful way to experience this album and I'm so happy it worked out like that. The album itself exceeded all my expectations. I didn't know if they could actually do it, but god damn did they pull it off.

I'll need to listen more to really form specific thoughts. I listened to it on a YouTube video (I didn't have a way to get my download onto my phone), and I tried not to check where I was at so I could just experience it, but i got to a guitar solo and I knew it was the one at minute 27 you all were talking about.

Basically I just had a spiritual experience, and I'll end this ramble here.

You probably like the band as a whole more than me though. I honestly hate Your Favorite Weapon outside of "The No Seatbelt Song". And Deja I only really like on occasion. I think The Devil and God is like, half flawless, half just pretty good. And then I think Daisy and Science Fiction or both consistently great, with a slight edge to Science Fiction.

I'd like to chime in a bit on the lyrics of 'Desert':

While I would never, EVER compare my own negative experiences to that of our gay brothers and sisters, being a gay-affirming pastor (which I am) is not without its difficulties. Desert represents an attitude I've seen - and argued against, and felt held against me - for more than a decade of ministry. I intimately know the pain and misery both the folks who feel that way go through, and the (exponentially greater) pain and misery that attitude inflicts on other people; it really hits home as someone who's spent his life in the church believing what I believe.

It's a tough listen. I really don't know whether to laugh or cry when the song ends with 'God is love' (truth be told, I laughed the first listen and got teary thinking through it the second time). It DOES suck and it IS incredibly difficult to hear that type of callous, hateful attitude and to know that's how so many within my community truly feel - their fear and discomfort and bigotry and hatred is greater than their love for even their own flesh and blood.

Anyway. I may not be able to revisit that one outside of the context of listening to the album straight through, because it's a little too much. But I'm so, SO glad that it's on the record and hope sincerely that someone with that attitude hears it, feels what they're meant to feel, and takes a good, long look in the mirror. I know for most of the fanbase it will be preaching to the choir, but its delivery is exactly what some people who aren't yet the choir need to hear.

every album from this band minus YFW means so much to me and they are all brilliant works of art that i can discuss for hours on end. they are masters of their medium. their ability to unnerve and captivate are unrivaled by any band I've ever heard. Deja Entendu is sorrow masked behind satire. Devil and God is hopeless uncertainty while genuinely believing you belong in such a catastrophic state of well being and faith. Daisy is curious paranoia that begs in fear in one moment and lashes unforgivingly right after.

I cant wait to spend more time with Science Fiction and unravel the personal connections I'll make for it. No other band has resonated with me like this. It encourages me to strive as an artist, and a person, and be confident in what I'm capable to construct. They are my inspiration in the purest form. Thank you for yet another album of mistery and wonder.

How come tickets are up for sale for New York already? Thought it was to be 9am local time (5pm for me here in UK) and how come they're $395 each on Ticketmaster?

About to listen for the second time after I had some much needed sleep.

Before I do, some waffle which no one will read:

Lying in bed last night, I truly felt a new cycle was starting in my life. In 2009, when Daisy was released, I was mid eating disorder and a few unhappy years followed. I've had some good times sure, like marrying my best friend in 2013, and mostly recovering. The past eight years though have mostly felt difficult at times and full of change, for both myself and my family.

I turned 29 on Tuesday. Brand New announced their album the same day. The following day I got tickets to see them, and last night, the album was released for us to hear. Thus begins the best few years of my life I hope. It sounds strange but I can feel my perspective changing already. This band means everything to me and I'm so happy I can share my love of them with you all.

The chorus to In The Water is screaming out to be played near the end of their sets. So cathartic.

Although I still wouldn't be surprised if they came out and did the album in full at these dates. As I say Brixton is way too small a venue to be their last ever London show. It would be incredible to see this in full with a few classics afterwards as a special one off.
