Saw this on Thursday night, extremely immersive and intense. I got almost no sleep the night before so I was worried I would get tired but the movie didn't allow me to do so haha

Favorite yet subtle part: When Hardy's plane ran out of gas and everything went quiet.

Question regarding the ending... Did Hardy destroy his plane because he knew he was going to be captured and didn't want the Germans to use it?

The aviation nerd in me nutted anytime the spitfires were on screen.

Man, this is me exactly. It's like the pieces were all there, but the parts never formed the whole for me. I respect the effort that went into this movie and it's undeniably well-crafted, but their is a sort of blandness to the end result and I can't quite place where it comes from.

I enjoyed it, but it definitely feels like a more minor effort in Nolan's filmography.

This was a great time in the theater. I personally didn't feel like it dragged at all, and I have a pretty weak attention span.

While the sound design was incredible and immersive, it was probably the worst movie for me to matinee on a hungover Sunday morning. That's ok tho, the misery added to the immersion.

Was lucky enough to catch this in 70mm IMAX and it was stunning.

Visually the movie is astounding and the story was emotionally intense. A great theater experience.

  14. I keep thinking about this movie. I thought it handled war in such a unique way. Truly sticks with me on how terrifying and horrific war is on everyone.

The bombs and explosions were so freaky. There was a part towards the beginning where bombs went off down a line and it's such a duh! thing but it freaked me out how everywhere might as well be a landmine - like just be in the wrong place at the wrong time for a second and that's it. You basically survive on lucky timing and where you happen to be standing, really. It was terrifying.

Saw it in 70mm, thought it was great. Among the best sound design I've ever heard in a movie, I back the comment above about the planes flying overhead 100%.

And assigned seating is nice for blockbuster opening weekends, pretty annoying the rest of the time. Having to buy tickets for a night time movie by 3pm unless I want to sit front row is the pits.

Man, any other movie with such little back story and insight into the characters would probably be far less interesting. But this movie really put me in the shoes of these guys. It's so intense and immersive right from the start that you kind of feel like you are each one of them with no time to rest or blink. Truly impressive thing to pull off in my opinion.

Also, I was so nervous that Hardy's character wasn't going to land. It made it all that more heartbreaking when we see him getting captured at the end. Heartbreaking to go from such excitement when he lands to the sudden disappointment to see that he ended up in enemy hands.
I need to see this again soon.

The things that didn't land for me still don't land, but the more I think about it the more I find the craft of this film to be in great service of a strong central thematic thesis, enough so that it works incredibly well. It probably won't be one of my top 15 of the year, but it was memorable and Nolan is almost always worth experiencing. Particularly, in this case, because of the 70mm and IMAX.

It's been almost two days and I can still hear the bombs going off and the sound of the guns on the spitfires. I think this has to be the early favorite to sweep the technical categories at the Oscars next year. It certainly deserves to.

For some reason I think Blade Runner 2049 could give it some competition in that regard

Baby Driver deserves a lot of technical sound love. Editing as well.

It's hard to bet against a big-budget war blockbuster in the sound categories. And the practical effects and cinematography in this are incredibly impressive just from a craftsmanship perspective, which could give it an edge. Just saying, this is going to be stiff competition to anything else hoping to win in those categories.

This was a truly moving experience, one that really drilled home how much of a personal sacrifice war is to those involved.

The most frightening and realistic scene had to be when the water began flooding the boat where all the soldiers were eating and coming down from the earlier attack.

The sheer claustrophobia of that scene, witnessing them all being in such utter shock as water floods the cabin, all while in darkness? Fucking unreal. I can't imagine being in that situation and being calm & rational. Seriously, an incredibly moving picture that puts sacrifice and commitment into perspective.

  24. Apparently, Michael Caine was the voice Tom Hardy was talking to over the radio. Had to keep his streak going, I guess!
