I mean not entirely, I think Spielberg could turn the material around. I think there are a lot of cool and interesting ideas in the book, but that they just weren’t as interesting to me. I would be willing to give the movie a chance to come up with its own spin.

  2. I think you're gonna be extremely disappointed if you think the movie is gonna be different or present it's "own spin." The author co-wrote the script.

Spielberg also has the Pentagon Papers movie with Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep coming out . . .

There's apparently a lot of differences from the book though. Since it was the author who wrote the screenplay though I can't imagine he'd stray too far from his initial vision.

I'm gonna find it really difficult to believe that any of the readers had ever played the Atari and arcade games...other than Pacman.

  6. Uh. Really? Hahaha. I'm 34. I played all that shit.

If you're passionate about any kind of geek-related pop culture you can find something to love in the book. Not JUST Atari or JUST Monty Python, etc.

Oh, I did not know that. That definitely makes me a little more skeptical, but we’ll see. I’ll give further trailers a chance and see if it works for me or not.

When the book was getting bland for me I kept reminding myself that not only were the references meant for nostalgia, the book and plot themselves harken back to the retro era. Think about it, it's a huge mix of war games and Tron with bits of sixteen candles, mad Max, blade runner, and ferris bueller in there. That's why I'm excited for the movie, I really want it to feel like an 80s flick.

  10. + The Last Starfighter, Beastmaster, Krull, Flight of the Navigator, Space Camp.

I think one of the hang ups this might have is the constant explaining of what stuff is. So many times in the book the lead describes different games where I always felt it was a you get it of you don't scenario. If you get the reference, you don't need the explanation. If you don't get the reference, it's tough to really care because it's all based on you knowing about what he's describing. I guess I get a bit confused who the audience is sometimes.

I am definitely not a die hard fan of the referenced material and I loved the book.

Summer Wars and the Congress felt like more worthwhile versions of RPO's story but I'm down for Spielberg, even if I'm more amped for the Papers.

so is the idea that this virtual reality world purposefully references pop culture from the entire spectrum of human achievements, albeit heavily focusing on stuff from the 1960-2000s, so that they can escape the crushing depression of their current world? So like in the trailer we see Deadpool and Harley Quinn. Are they THE Deadpool and Harley Quinn or are they people who have eschewed making a custom avatar and instead take on the APPEARANCE of those characters? im just curious about the "rules" of the world but despite all of that this looks pretty fucking cool and seeing the Iron Giant is enough to make me salivate.

the second one. it's not like the characters come to life or anything, it's like making a custom skin in some MMO that we have now.
i'm stoked they're putting Iron Giant in, apparently they couldn't get the rights to UltraMan, hahah. which is kind of a bummer actually.
