George and Matty's synth is so incredibly unique that the bands that have been inspired by the band don't sound like they're ripping it off. This gives me complete confidence that they won't feel the need to outwit their imitators and come out with something too "out there" as an overreaction since they're already playing on their own level.

I just hope Matty doesn't go too heavy on that aspect of their music. Some great tracks for sure, but some of them drag to the end.

    Which tracks?

I'd guess the synth may be more prominent since the eponymous EP featured mostly synth-heavy tracks.

  7. I'd be stoked if the EP is a good indicator of the album.

I'm also hoping that down the road/on the DLID album they do things in that more upbeat rock vein, seeing as Sex is one of my favorite songs of all time.

It'd be kinda cool if they just "updated" the EP with new songs but they've also grown a lot since those were written so new songs would (obviously) be ideal.

I mean, I guess I and others are interested in hearing your opinion, but you just keep saying "some tracks" and not actually elaborating.

The second post I made about it wasn't just "some tracks." Seeing as how there's only a handful, if that, on the new album with minimal vocals and heavy synth/no full band I figured it was easy to pick those out.

I think they released one for every track. I have an extra "The Ballad of me And My Brain" size large if you're interested.

So, this morning I was continuing my first journey through The Cure's discography and made it to their album Bloodflowers. I was surprised to find that Robert Smith mentioned that he considered this the end of a trilogy of albums that served as kind of the core work of the band. Obviously, I was immediately reminded of Matty's comments about Music for Cars. However, I was also reminded of a tweet Jamie Oborne made regarding his love for The Cure.

As well as being their manager, Oborne has been referred to as the band's fifth member (over even Waugh, their saxophonist, which is a crime by the way, there ought to be 6 members). This makes me wonder what his role in influencing the art direction of the band is. Matty was looking like Robert Smith at their BBC Orchestra concert last year. Heather from PALE WAVES was sporting a Cure shirt at their Denver gig this past tour too.

It's neat to see artists emulating other artists. The recurring theme in Matty's interviews during the first era about pop music needing a renaissance by people who had a deep understanding of the history of music popped out at me when I drew parallels between Smith and his trilogy comments.

The Cure endured some pretty harsh criticism about their records after the second album in their trilogy was released. They ditched their ethereal and depressing sound for a more 90s jam vibe. They were then accused of having become caricatures of themselves when they decided to return to form for a third album.

In light of their influences, I think that Matty, Jamie, and company are wise to attempt to create a pure embodiment of T H E 1 9 7 5 while they can. Naming the record Music for Cars is a signal that they are returning to form and doing everything in their power to keep the lightning in the bottle. This will allow them to continue to explore new musical frontiers as a group of friends as Drive Like I Do while avoiding the incessant comparisons to older versions of themselves.

In 10 years we hopefully won't have threads like every Taking Back Sunday thread where we compare the newest release to either TYAF or WYWTB.

Matty and his hair looking more like debut/pre-debut Matty nowadays. I imagine their headline set at Latitude this weekend will be something amazing as a send off to this era:

Hair might be due to the downpour. Also just noticed he's wearing the necklace here.
