What makes you feel this way about that track?

Lyrically the track is pretty good, musically and vocally it seemed to go nowhere imo. Just felt kind of straight forward or boring/uninspired. I do like the other new track though(does sound a little like Cope/Hope era stuff though).

Uninspired? I would say this is the most inspired they have sounded in a very long time.

One of Cartel's more recent songs sounds Uninspired.

 

Alien is so, so amazing. Atmospheric, deep, multi-layered, subtle but hard hitting worth listening over and over giving a lot of the best Andy offers. It has such a distinctive sound and it is so rare I hear a song and say, "Dang, I'm not sure I've heard something like this I have to listen to it again." It's a bit Sufjan-esque, in the best way possible. Uninspired is not a proper word for this, even if it's not your thing.

I still like the Gold better, but I have a feeling the Gold will stay where it is for me. And Alien will mutate in different ways.

 

The vocals alone in The Alien are inspirational.

 

When I heard it I wanted to hear it again and I keep wanting to hear it tbh

 

It definitely goes somewhere instrumentally just not in the way of traditional Manchester Orchestra. I'm glad to see the band expanding their sound

 

I mean I wish I could add something to this convo.... but y'all have said it better than I could. I honestly think this will be my AOTY

 

MO has always had diversity in their music. I wasn't expecting a Cope Part II as their next record because they've never tried to do the same record twice. Between Bad Books, RAGC, Hope, and the Swiss Army Man soundtrack, Andy has had a lot of experience to come up with something new for a this record. Plus producing other bands. What we've heard so far has been really interesting and again, this album feels like it will be strong as a whole and not a bunch of individual tracks smashed together.

 

Yea I think the biggest challenge for bands is for each album to have a fresh sound while when you listen to it still thinking, well that's definitely "Manchester Orchestra." The first two songs have me so pumped, has the kind of depth, introspection and crunch I crave coming from them. Never really been this pumped for an album in a long while.

 

I am going to get to hear this record tomorrow! So stoked

"The Alien" is another interesting song. Beautiful, but meandering and a little boring to me. I kept expecting a change in the melody or some more dynamic instrumentation but nope. Certainly is piquing my interest for this album though
