How are you gonna post on a Deftones thread that ATF is not a good album?

The aggressive nature of it, beginning of overtly sexual imagery( which became a Deftones staple),Abe's experimentation with different snare drums on each track, and not to mention Be Quiet and Drive is easily among their best songs.

Whole album influenced a ton of great bands. I know this is your opinion though.

I like the aggression on Around the Fur, it's a very good album imo

Honestly I have so many memories of ATF when I first heard it I might just be the wrong person to describe it's excellence. I also love how DE takes a lot of the AtF sound/song structure, but puts a newer lense on it.

You may not like the album, but saying ATF is "not good" is flat out wrong.

If you've got any affection for nü-metal at all, then you can appreciate how these guys did it better than nearly all of their peers.

And if you don't, you don't.

Yeah I get how maybe this album was a big deal in 1997 when nu-metal was a thing and this album showed experimentation from that, but this album has a lot of forgettable moments and even a few forgettable songs.

But I know most of you all who posted here haven't really been able to craft any sort of argument for the album that doesn't read "these guys did it better than nearly all their peers" or just simply "You're wrong" or "It's great," so I'm not convinced on it in the slightest bit.

And, I mean, if Limp Bizkit and Korn were considered this band's peers back in the 90s, then the bar was never raised very high to begin with.

Idk I used some different reasons than those for why I like it. Not gonna argue about it though. WP onward is definitely more interesting.

I could see how it could have some "forgettable" songs to peeps who have only heard the album a handful of times, but I love them all now.

Dai the Flu, Lotion, Mascara, and Lhabia I wasn't too keen on at first. Though all of those shred in my eyes now.

I wasn't including you in my post. I, at least, appreciated your post. Didn't know Abe used a different snare on every song. I love Abe, he's one of my favorite drummers.

I dunno. I wish I saw the appeal to ATF. Like I said, I like some songs on it and I respect it for what it was and what it did for the band and I get why they play a lot of those songs live even today, but I don't think it stands up 20 years later. I think there's much more interesting music out there. More power to you and to everyone else who really enjoys it and what it has done for you all.

Hey man, you like what you like. This is the Deftones thread, and just like all their fans everyone loves different things about them. It's part of what makes them so great. I don't really dig Adrenaline all that much but lots of people still swear that it's the best Deftones album.

basically what I'm getting at. If the kid doesn't like it, fair, but labeling it "not good" is, by extension, saying the band isn't good. #wentthere

Lol just because I don't think one of their eight albums isn't good doesn't mean I don't think Deftones isn't good. Get over it, guy

I think one thing I love about ATF is just how confident it sounds. To come out with an album that tops your debut in every way is no easy feat. They took what worked on Adrenaline and enhanced it even further. The big songs from that album are undeniably great (My Own Summer, Around the Fur, Be Quiet), but songs like Lhabia, Mascara, and Dai the Flu really make that album for me.

Yes. All of the songs make a statement in my book. Cutting, in your face riffs with a great backend in Chi and Abe. Chino also found his voice on this album and it really marks the beginning of their "sound". The way his voice drifts off in the verses of MX? Just awesome stuff.

...and to think I finally found a thread where we could all get along... *sigh*

I've said it before, but I guess I'll repeat it here. I love ATF becaus the emotion of that record is so real and overwhelming.

"Lhabia," "Around the Fur," "Rickets," "Lotion," "Headup," "Be Quiet" - all sound like a person being driven insane by the weight of their feelings.

    Which I can relate to.
