Hockey has a huge huge issue with race. There's the constant rhetoric of being a "good ol Canadian/American boy". One of the best players of our generatio, PK Subban, is actually black (the only reason he got into the game, even though his parents were poor was because his town paid for gear kids could borrow).The guy constantly deals with coded racism. Pundits (almost all white males) will deride him for "showboating" after goals. His motivation is always in question (similar xenophobia is applied to European players, especially Russians). There's always debate about whether Canada should let him go to the Olympics even though he is one the nation's top players. Oh, during a game or practice he had a banana thrown at him from the stands.

Prior to PK Subban, almost all black pros were there to fight. Georges laraque, Dominick brashear, and Peter worrell to name a few. During their playing days there was one other black player who was actually a skill guy (jarome iginla who is half black Canadian).

If you really want to get annoyed look up the experience Akim aliu dealt with in his career. Oh and look into how Josh ho sang repeatedly got snubbed by team Canada even though his skill set is amazing. The media used words like "brash' and "wild" to describe him.

One of the few indigenous players was Chris Simon, who is basically now bankrupt and definitely has a substance abuse problem (he was also only in the pros to fight and hurt other guys).

The racial politics is clear, what's worse is that the league is totally cool with it.
