I had someone on the DS3 subreddit (who are all very nice I know these games have this perception of elitist players but the ones I've run into have been a joy) deliver the Wolf Knight armor to my character because 1) fashionsouls is very important and 2) i like to roleplay that im artorias whos been given a second chance at redemption and linking the flame because i am a lore nerd.

the Abyss Watchers are such a fun fight I love that they fight with each other and I love how theyre a pretty deliberate reference to both Artorias and Gwyn

Time to start the DLCs. I can't get over just how nostalgically wonderful the Soul Of Cinder is. I get chills and a big stupid grin

Think I'm going to play through DS1 and DS2 again and maybe attempt to write a really big long blog about my thoughts on the series as a whole for anyone that gives a shit. I like taking things I love and dissecting the shit out of them lol

I continue to really wish they'd put out a Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition Remastered on PS4/Xbone. Would be nice to have the whole trilogy on the same console (plus Bloodborne if you're playing on PS4) for a series replay.

DaS and DS should absolutely be on PS4 100%. i wouldnt be surprised at all if From decides to release a Soulsborne digital package though. Id just love to have all my Souls/Soulslike games on one console but its w/e.

Also side note its hilarious how different DaS 1 is as an experience when you play it as a spellcaster. its like the enemies dont know how to react and will just let you pummel them with pyromancy/spears.

to quote someone on reddit "its like playing an fps except youre the only person with a gun and everyone else is blind"

It's crazy how accurate the description of it as "easy mode" can be. At least, when it comes to the regular enemies. Bosses obviously can require more thought when you have to figure out a way to never let them get close to you.

it feels like such a huge oversight compared to how meticulously crafted the rest of the game is. its like they forgot to program the enemies to respond to being hit by spells or ranged attacks. luckily there are some bosses that can really pump the brakes on the spellcaster train but otherwise the trash mobs and most of the bosses are just point and click adventure games.

I always play through the games with a melee build first and then when I want to revisit them I usually roll a caster for easy mode just to be able to experience the environments and lore and such again.

i do the exact same thing haha. DS2 and DS3 did more to fix the "easymode" of caster builds but theres still some cheesy moments. its like From wants us to make characters that are a jack of all trades with some melee AND ranged/spell abilities but that just isnt feasible sometimes especially if you want to pvp and youre limited on your soul level.

Yeah, jack-of-all-trades builds are a great way to hamstring yourself late game, too. You just can't wield some of the best weapons in the game if you don't pick an attribute and specialize. You almost need to go into the games knowing fully what endgame weaponry you want to wield right from the start, which is one of the reasons this series can be so intimidating to newcomers.

I actually wrote a blog on GameInformer's website a while ago that touched on this a bit, back after I had first beaten DS1 and DS2:

Ashes Of Ariandel was really fun. I love the connection back to the painted world and i love the snowy, eerie setting and the viking-esque enemies. ive tried to map out the DaS world and I'd like to think this painted world is somehow linked to Frozen Elyium Loyce from DaS2 but thats just a personal headcanon thing. shame that theres really only 1 boss, even if the gravetender is a neat reference to Sif/Artorias, but WOW Sister Friede is an incredible boss. She might beat Lady Maria as far as a 1v1 duel boss is concerned (even if technically its NOT a 1v1 in the second phase but they share a healthpool so w/e) and the weapon she gives you is a blast. AoA has some great weapons in general and I'm also really excited to try to PVP matchmaking arena that was added. Now I'm off to start Ringed City!

I've also been playing some DaS1 and DaS2 on the side and they are, as expected, wonderful as ever. DaS2 deserves more love, I know it gets knocked for being so different and for sometimes being a little weird mechanically but I think it works as a nice sidegrade to DaS1. I think it was really smart to give the player lifegems as a new tool to combat the games insistence on stacking the odds against you, its occurred to me just how often you fight 2 or more enemies whereas that was a rarer occurrence in DaS1. its also got some great PVP and unique builds plus its the first game where we can actually hear our characters say words, even if its just little "Hey!"s or "I'm Sorry"s its still a neat lore point that our hollow/undead/ashen characters can indeed speak. id also argue DaS2 has the best Fashionsouls but thats reeeeally subjective.

planning on going through everything in the games, DaS1 DaS2 and DaS3 plus their accompanying DLCs. Mainly to figure out lore points and to acquire all the armors/weapons in each game just so i can say ive seen all the content these games have to offer.

One of my favorite gaming memories will always be summer of 2014, sitting on the floor of my room at my mom's house, still hammered from a barbecue earlier that day, going through Brightstone Cove Tseldora and beating Freja on my second try. I was so proud of drunk me.

Don't know why I just thought of that haha

so I guess Code Vein is our next big Soulslike entry. looks like anime mixed with Bloodborne which, as ive said before, the Soulsborne series feels like it borrows a lot from anime in terms of how the world/characters behave. hope it continues the streak of Nioh and The Surge as far as soulslike games that are pretty great and add new mechanics to the gameplay. seems like a big one for CV is the Companions feature, I guess theyre something like Mass Effects squads where you can pick a character to accompany you and theres various ones to choose from with different abilities to compliment different builds/playstyles. anime soulslike gothic vampires, sign me the fuck up.

now i have to figure out how CV fits into my own personal headcanon that all the SoulsBorne and Soulslike games take place in the same universe......hmmmm

kind of sick of other games just blatantly ripping off Dark Souls, none of them have lived up to it.

im fine with it as long as they keep adding in different mechanics to keep it fresh. i dont expect any of them to be as good as a SoulsBorne game but ive been thoroughly impressed with Nioh and The Surge as far as gameplay and mechanics go. they dont touch From as far as world building and story goes but then again not many companies can imo.

I'm cool with it. I don't think any have lived up to the quality of the From games but I think they're at least competent at what they do and they have a solid base to work from. I'd rather people try and be creative on top of a well developed framework than them making bad games. Most games are ripping off some formula, I think Souls is good enough to be one of those.

much like Doom and the subsequent "Doom-Clones" like Marathon, System Shock 2, Heretic, Wolfenstein, Half Life, etc. which function more as "sidegrades" and, as you said, building on a framework. i think Soulslike could have that same sort of legacy to it and im excited for potential future games.

Yeah, and ripping off other things and combining them with your own ideas is how most of the best shit gets made. It's very rare to get something completely original, even Soulsborne took a lot of influences from other games and anime/manga, it's all good.

agreed. theres a lot of neat potential for Soulslike with lots of cool settings (my pirate idea [pls hire me to make it] nordic mythology, greek mythology, etc) as well as some great opportunities to introduce new mechanics/improve current ones.

Yeah I don't know how one can be upset about people trying to make Soulsborne-like games. From basically created a new genre; like @CoffeeEyes17 said, without people "ripping off Wolfenstein" we wouldn't have the entire first-person shooter genre. Someone had to be first, it just so happens that in this situation first has also been the best and will likely always remain the best.

    *me playing the Ringed City*
oh hey that guy has the Heavy Set that was supposed to be in the base game. neat. guess i should talk to him
oh he gave me a titanite slab that time. how nice of him but that seems so random
awww he seems sweet, guess hes going to the purging monument. cool, hopefully the shrine handmaiden has his armor set now
wait whats he doing here in the Shared Grave? guess i can talk to him aga......wait, what did that emote say?
oh a cutscene....wait a second this is familiar. holy shit.
THAT SON OF A BITCH I CANT BELIEVE HE GOT ME AGAIN

not gonna lie that was one of the coolest and most surreal moments in the entire series to me. cant believe who Lapp ended up being, that makes the lore even more....complicated I guess. the DLC was great and felt more like a PvE dlc as opposed to Ashes which felt more like it was geared towards the PvPers. Gael might be my new favorite boss and overall character in DS3 he reminds me a lot of Artorias both in his story and how he functions as a boss. really wonderful stuff all around.

A fine dark soul to you

Any PC players try out this new mod "Daughters of Ash" yet? Some dude completely remade the original Dark Souls 1, added a ton of cut content, a new story, quests, npc's, enemies and bosses.

I only just beat Taurus Demon but it's already pretty different, very impressive. (and harder, or I'm just really rusty)

It’s genuinely impressive. You have to take totally different routes. I just fought a “new” boss and I don’t know how the dude did it.

    It’s also much harder
