Although we do have first past the post (which desperately needs reform), we have something like 650 constituencies. Unlike, say, the presidential race it splits it up massively so the vote is a little more representative of actual national mood and doesn't have nearly as high a chance of a popular vote not equating a victory- last time was 1951 by 0.8% of the vote ahead of the second party.

As for moving away from 2 party politics, the last 3 elections have certainly been moving towards a multi-party system but Lib Dem and UKIP have both effectively collapsed in the last 2-3 years. That poll also doesn't show the SNP who have absolutely dominated the Scottish vote.
