Yeah count me in for them working with a different producer(s) on the next album too. Bill Stevenson would be my vote too just because I love his work with My Shame Is True and Matt obviously has experience working with him. Unfortunately I feel like the band is content and happy working with Feldmann, they seem to have a really tight relationship with him. As much as I like California, for the next album I definitely want something different.

Bill Stevenson always comes up and I cannot support the decision enough haha. I would love so much to have him produce the next blink record.

I've tried putting my finger on it, but I think overall, what this newest album suffers from is that most of the songs get pushed into a formula - the whole "growing up" theme is one aspect of that.

I don't want to completely blame Feldmann for this, but it's been pointed out to no end that there are a ton of repetitive elements in this whole batch of songs. The "na na"s and "whoa"s, that same "Bored to Death" style riff (and lack of any other riffs), typical verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus structure, CGAE chord progression, singing about California and growing up... It just seems like these parameters were set and then they wrote an album within those confines. Basing this on the band's comments and without over speculating, it would seem like Feldmann's goal was "Hey, this is what most people think of when they hear the name blink-182... Let's achieve that again." Even when the songs are good, so many of us get taken out of the moment by noticing the same trends popping up in each track. It's distracting.

They showed glimpses of it here and there, but I would really like a producer that pushes them to think outside the box but still maintain the energy and enthusiasm of California. That said, I've still thoroughly enjoyed California and its deluxe songs.

For a comeback album to get blink back on the map and popular again after basically what 10 or 12 years of being irrelevant Feldmann was definitely the right choice because it worked. Moving forward though especially with all 3 guys fully on board and committed yeah I'd like to see them go in a different direction and try different things. I don't want another California Part 3.

The nanas, whoas don't bother me as much as there really weren't any memorable guitar riffs on the album or with the new songs officially released. Say what you want about Tom but the guy could write a good riff or hook. And so can Matt which makes it kind of confusing. I also think the patterns of Mark sings the first verse, Matt sings the chorus or 2nd verse could old. I'd love to see them have Matt or Mark only songs on the next album. Again I don't want to blame Feldmann for any of that because none of us were in the recording studio so we have no clue what went into the thought processes there.

My big fear is the guys will be content with Feldmann because they have such a good relationship with him and we'll get another California type album.

yeah that last part you mentioned, at least from interviews Feldmann seems big on the drink a lot of coffee and let's knock out everything fast with high energy, which I've thoroughly enjoyed. and Deluxe feeling like more California totally makes sense. whether it's Feldmann or another producer, either way, I'm hoping for something a little different for the next album. I want to see more of blend of +44, blink, and Trio. Definitely some songs have reached that or close, so I'm interested to see what direction they take going forward.

  8. Ok, after much deliberation, this is my personal version of California (at least for now).

    11. Wildfire
    12. The Only Thing That Matters
    13. Parking Lot

I made a playlist of it in this order and it all flows really well. Also, I've finally come around to "Hey I'm Sorry." I dig it quite a bit now.

I mostly agree with all of that. Feldmann was a great choice for their first record back and first record with a new member. He brought some life back into the blink 182 name. I just don't know about using him moving forward which you also stated.

The nana's/whoa's and things like that aren't inherently bad in themselves; I was mainly referring to their overuse to the point where you basically knew what songwriting/production elements were going to make an appearance before you even heard these deluxe songs, you know? It was evidence that they started to get stuck in patterns regardless if the songs are good or bad.

But yes, I agree we can't blame Feldmann for all of that because we don't know everyone's level of input. I was just stating that he could possibly be a big factor in some of the repetitiveness based on things he's said in the past like "This is what I think of when I think of blink-182". All speculation though.

Won't be able to hear the leak until I get back from work. Is there any difference between the Hey I'm Sorry from the Japanese bonus track and the deluxe edition?

    2. Hey I'm Sorry
    3. Parking Lot
    4. 6/8
    5. Wildfire

I'm curious to see where the other ones end up. +44 is my jam so I'm curious to see if I'll get any of those vibes from these songs.

I would love for the next album to be a mix of Untitled meets +44 meets Crimson meets My Shame Is True and they have a massive orgy and it forms an album.

"Bottom of the Ocean" is probably the closest to +44 of any song from California. It's a little on the dancey electronic side like that album.

I didn't exactly get +44 vibes from "Last Train Home" and "Long Lost Feeling" but I think those two are both different and cool.

At this point, telling Blink 182 to make a more mature album is kinda like telling Will Ferrell to star in more serious movie roles.

Also, they may have a bit of a formula how they write songs, but it's worked for them. They really seem to love California and had fun making it. I'd rather a band I like make music I can expect from them instead of turning into a band like Fall Out Boy who just seem like a trend chasing me (in my opinion).

Some people also struggle with the concept of growing up. It may be about responsibility, health, lifestyle, sticking with what they know (Hugh Hefner for example).

Whenever Mark has Q&A's on twitter....We should all ask him about working with Bill Stevenson for the next album.

well I think, at least for me, that it's not so much like I want "mature music". but that I'd like less songs about being a teenager. you can have honest lyrics that don't feel like a 40 year old writing about being teenagers all the time, and they've shown that that obviously can write more in depth lyrics, so I'd enjoy seeing more of that. and for musically, I don't need them to take a major left turn or anything, but just more variety in the guitar riffs and less whoas and na's (of which I'm a fan of) is all.

edit: and honestly I say all this because it's things that would interest me to hear, but likely regardless I will still jam out a ton to whatever the next album is haha. stoked they are doing another so soon, but really want another Alkaline Trio album after that.

  24. He mixed a couple tracks on CA. I feel like the mixing and mastering on CA suffered in addition to John's production. It had no warmth or low end. Some stuff is better on dlx

I read "columbine style" and thought "what a weird thing to say"
