The Carter V and Rebirth both had a handful of solid stuff, I think he's still got that spark, but it's few and far between.

Wayne's a much more talented rapper than Drake so i'd actually like to hear what he cooked up

I've listened to this a bunch now and I honestly don't ever see myself ever putting it over anything from GKMC to DAMN (maybe about equal with Section 80 and Mr. Morale) but this still might already be my rap AOTY, that's how fucking good his catalogue is

I don’t really see the purpose of debating whether something is a classic tbh. Tons of bad shit is ‘classic’ and tons of good shit isn’t. I do think, tho, that more people are clearly aping some rap songs at this point than tpab

TPAB is one of the musical achievements of the 2010s. A singular album that will be listened to for decades. You can feel Kendrick pour everything he loves about music into it, you can feel the time it took to painstakingly craft an album that i consider to be as perfect as any album ever made. And yet, its impact on hip-hop/the world was so minimal, so disappointing, that Kendrick returned with DAMN., an album primarily focused on the world being hopeless.

Kendrick is just one of the rare artists where I remember exactly what I was doing and where I was for when his albums dropped. Deeply special. Top 5 dead or alive at this point he’s earned it

Didn't occur to me that you guys would be talking about this in here when I posted it in the Hip-Hop thread but yeah that Drake lawsuit is an astoundingly bad look for him, I can't even imagine how he thought that would go over The more of this pathetic shit he pulls, the more people are going to forget that he actually put up a pretty good fight with Pushups and Family Matters (until the abysmal Heart Part 6)

When “Like That” dropped back in march did anyone predict we’d have a new Kendrick album, a superbowl gig, a Grammy nominated song about calling one of the biggest artists in the world a pedo and Drake down so bad that he’s taking it to court

Same. jammed it all today and wow it’s such a concise listen. Super listenable but I think he needed a record like this. I think him making a more mainstream record is also a drake diss in a way. Like “let me show him I’m a Pulitzer Prize winner AND a hit maker”

I’ve been in a bit of a funk with being able to connect to any new (to me, regardless of release year) music the last few months or so but this, THIS is something that immediately struck a cord with me. idk any of the beefs or references on this but that hasn’t dampened my enjoyment of this. I haven’t really connected or loved any of Lamar’s other work and this genre isn’t my usual jam which makes this super surprising to me that I love this so much and strikes me personally as a breath of fresh air and something exciting. Also TERRIFIC to listen to on runs as I’ve done the last two mornings.

I am not dialed in to the swiftie world enough to have an opinion on Jack Antonoff. But he’s cool in my book here because of the production

This is definitely the most straight up "fun" album Kendrick has ever dropped (with no overarching concept or story), and I do really enjoy it a ton in that context. TV Off blew my mind and Squabble Up is gonna be a big hit I do kind of feel like this album is destined to go a little under the radar in broader discussions of his discography just compared to how incredibly artistic all of his other albums are but I acknowledge it's probably way too early to be saying that lol Kendrick is really just the greatest to ever do it at this point. I can't wait to see where this release goes now that we know it exists... and I don't exactly NOT subscribe to the theory that there's more...
