That is what the Oscars do. Driving Miss Daisy over Do the Right Thing, Crash over Brokeback Mountain, Green Book over BlackKklansman.

I didn't really like Mulholland Dr. and Inland Empire the first time I saw them, mostly because I didn't know enough about film, but Blue Velvet was a transformative experience. I mentioned this somewhere already, but his ability to make something so benign so terrifying was a skill he had that no one else can match. Someone like Dennis Hopper, who I knew from a handful of pretty mediocre roles, becoming this monster was so affecting. A lot of filmmakers have tried to do the whole "the real terror is beneath the veneers of the suburbs" routine, but he is the one who got it.

It is probably the hardest a death has hit me other than Akira Toriyama. It is a little bit worse because Toriyama's work was more in my past while it felt like Lynch would inevitably do something new one day. Robin Williams' death was definitely a shock, and I remember a professor letting us out of class early when Michael Jackson died.

It wouldn't be Aronofsky without that shameless plug.

I have no idea what any of this means. It is a school computer so there is very little we can change.

That's funny. It says Hawk Time. Our mascot is the Hawk and it is the principals' Friday address to the kids.

I hope some of the weird kids appreciate the tribute. It is senior skip day today so if the numbers are low enough I might put on Eraserhead.

Ebert hated Blue Velvet too. Fire Walk With Me was considered a huge disaster for many years. Now pretty much everyone has come around. Even something as artistically compromised as his Dune movie can be appreciated for some of the offbeat choices he made.

That ad really sums up what made his work so horrifying. He could terrify you just with the right music and manipulating a lot of everyday images that you wouldn't think twice about. It didn't take millions of dollars of effects or anything like that. The way the old couple are laughing with the lighting in Mulholland Dr. is the stuff of nightmares.

During The Return, it was frustrating to understand what he was doing. What is the point of Dougie? Is this just a bunch of cameos and a band that Lynch wanted to feature? Since it had been a decade removed from Inland Empire, maybe he had lost his touch. Then Episode 8 happened. People say that a movie or show was jaw dropping, but this time it might literally be true. I still don't have the full vocabulary to explain how I felt watching that episode and then scouring the Internet to see if anyone else could intelligently describe what we had just witnessed. It felt like a world-changing event. How could we ever go back after that? From that point on the show made so much sense, and when Cooper came back, got dressed, and looked into the camera and said "I am the FBI" as the classic Twin Peaks theme swelled, I knew I had seen something that will be timeless.

I am rewatching 30 Rock and Jenna wins an award called "Best Actress in a movie based on a musical based on a movie" which is literally what happened to Mean Girls. Incredible.

CGI was being abused everywhere around that time. The CGI Dwayne Johnson scorpion is infamous. The Matrix Reloaded was all over it. It took a while for filmmakers to learn how to use it more sparingly. Everyone was so impressed with The Abyss and Jurassic Park but didn't learn how they used it correctly.

There is this knock against Baker for portraying marginalized people and/or communities, but what are they suggesting is the alternative? Not to portray these people at all?
