I’ve already missed the conversation, but other than new Kendrick my favorite hip hop album this year is definitely Ka’s The Thief Next to Jesus.

I'm revisiting Katotonia's discography and every single time I keep returning to this album the most. Their sound has changed a lot over their long career, but this one must be their proggiest so I figured it'd fit here. [MEDIA] "The Night Subscriber" and "Serac" are godtier

I don’t like Peekaboo or Man at the Garden. Then those last few songs are much weaker than the first half of the album. For that reason I won’t say it’s better than DAMN, which is a much stronger album than I think a lot of you are remembering

Alphonse completely nailed my misgivings about the redundant "victory lap" tone of the album (I thought the concert was the victory lap!), the boring petty beefs and the lazy self-mythologizing. I hadn't picked up on the "black capitalism" element creeping into his music, which is maybe most deflating of all - come back Eckhart Tolle, all is forgiven....

I was there for the NATION fiasco but this feels short and low-stakes enough that I could imagine another one turning up before the Super Bowl.

Almost certainly not, mostly because I have no desire to go to expensive, hyped up shows surrounded by dudes who look like me. The hypervigilance around this particular band continues to be deeply strange and I think an expression of displaced guilt and maybe denial over the wider toxicity of the overall scene.

I think I agree with that, though these days I'll take "the five of us are dying" because the title is hilarious and the lyrics are a little more on the snide side (the more fun mode of MCR for me). I really like the clarity on the solo section as well. "disenchanted" is underrated, like a great lost GN'R ballad

Every year I read some version of pre-emptive panic over Brand New potentially maybe touring again and every year it gets sillier. If it happens you will not be forced to go. And who's "we"?

Imma keep it a buck, I definitely like this but it's also the coldest I've felt on day one listens of a new Kendrick project. Two tracks that sound like "Not Like Us," plus I think "Peekaboo" and the title track are pretty obnoxious. But also I love what Kendrick does, I like that he sounds more casual here, and I'm excited for this to continue to grow on me. It does drive me insane when something is out for like seven hours and professional reviewers are calling it his best lol

Already linked on the Emo thread, but the adored-by-me stop.drop.rewind album has some intensely proggy flexes and a sax solo. Blood Incantation are also somewhere on the prog spectrum but everyone already knows that's great. I did like the CH but it did register as a tiny step down for me on the whole (with some amazing highs).

IDK why I'm in hyper contrarian mode today but I found the album concept overbearing. I think I like my concept albums a little looser / more interpretive ha, the theatrical feel adds a campy dimension to their sound that doesn't seem to work for me. I wonder if the return of the growls has people extra excitable.

Didn't realize the self-titled full length was actually released in full today and it's absolutely wild. RIYL....idk, guitars? The only pop-punk/emo/etc album of the year with a bass-driven mathy breakdown worthy of Gorguts (to my knowledge). Instant purchase, hope these guys finally get some broader love. [MEDIA]

Anyway I've only got one listen in but so far this feels like easily his worst album since the early days - the sung hooks are generic or worse, the lyrics are less distinctive than he's ever been, and Jack Antonoff should be [redacted] for sport based on how much less rich, original and textured this sounds than the TDE albums (and for "Please Please Please" just in general). I did like the opener, "gloria" and "reincarnated" on first pass. Hope to feel differently down the line!
