I just got this the other day too on a whim! I somehow missed that jj Abrams was involved in a book, so I just picked it up without looking too into it. It’s really awesome packaging. I’m a bit intimidated to read it, but also really looking forward to getting into it.

So I'm not ready to read this as I've got to keep the Sanderson momentum going, but I don't think my previous comment was apt as I hadn't even opened it fully before. Maybe it'll encourage someone else to pick it up so you'll have someone to discuss it with sooner but... This book is gorgeous and a work of art. It's aged to look like an old book, it even SMELLS like an old book - it has old library stamps on it, and there are multiple pieces of art / additional documents throughout the book that are printed on separate pieces of paper / cardboard etc. I didn't remove any of them, and carefully put them back if they fell out (as I am sure they have a place within the story), and as an overall package, it really is something cool. As I said, it'll be a while before I'll get into it, but I wanted to add to my thanks now that I've taken the time to actually look at it. There's so much care taken into how the book looks and feels (including all the font choices, and 'handwritten' margin notes). Ultimately, I feel that what I think of the narrative will be secondary to the enjoyment of the uniqueness of it all. S.

Katana Zero was f'ing awesome from beginning to end - absolutely loved it. Now I'm playing Portal 2 which I somehow never played despite being a HL geek, and I know I'm going to struggle as I'm a big dummy with spatial awareness, but fun so far. Just a few hours in, but I don't know if I'll get to the end without at the very least cheating. After that, I'm going to play Signalis after seeing some very good things about it (including in here from a few years ago when I searched). I am going to avoid all spoilers, but I am confident it'll be another gem that'll I'll love. It's crazy that after really only enjoying AAA cinematic games (HL / GOW / TLOU / Uncharted / RDR2) etc. I am exploring so many cool, unique indie games. These days I'm really just looking for a fun gameplay hook or a compelling story and around 10 hours of gameplay, and if it does BOTH then well, sign me up right now.

I'll try them but I wonder if this is confirmation bias at play from the internet screaming about it. They said they had been testing them in multiple markets silently without anyone knowing, then people know and all of a sudden they're bad? Who knows. I'll have to get some.

One of my best reading buddies IRL has Demon in White in his top 5 all time, so I'll finish the series no matter what. But yeah, I'm not yet wowed. It's good and I'm enjoying it, just expected more. I'm perfectly fine reading things I just enjoy without being blown away or emotionally connect with. That's most books. I just expected more after the hype? And it still could get there!

RE Sun Eater - if you didn't like 2, it just may not click, and if you aren't wow'd by 3, then I'd say it's definitely not for you. 3 is one of my all time favorite sci-fi fantasy stories, if not my favorite. It's massive in scope. and combines so many different genres / styles that it feels like multiple novels in one... It's the absolute peak of the series so far to me.

I think a lot of reactions show how reading order is so important on the impression a book makes. I read Name of the Wind as one of my first fantasies and thus didn't know what was inspired by others and what was original. When I read The Wheel of time and Robin Hobb after, some things in The Name of the Wind didn't have the same shine knowing that it was retreading ground. I do still like a good part of the series and saw a pic of Pat Rothfuss lately where he looked so healthy and well, and that gives me hope that he'll finish one day. I also read NK Jemisin early on in my fantasy journey, but I think that holds up regardless, and there are some really unique things done to the narrative structure that are worthy of all the praise. #4 to Garretts question - The 7-1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle - A pretty controversial book it seems by goodreads rating / reviews, but I loved it. It is sort of fantasy, but it's more of a very unique murder mystery. The ending wasn't the strongest part of the book, but man, was it a mind bender trying to piece it together and follow along with the timeline.

I know nothing about Eggnog but I had a friend that made eggnog and so I had some only to learn he made it LAST Christmas and it was consumed then, then stored, and brought out the next year. I didn't get sick but apparently everyone else there thought it was totally fine because it's... alcohol? If I had known i would have declined trying it. EDIT - I mean, I drink baileys and things that has been opened forever but homemade eggnog just seems different.

I think I'll like this album a lot from what's out so far. Some lame lyrics, and a tad overproduced in parts with how syncopated and compressed everything feels, but the hooks are great, the heaviness is there, and overall I dig the sound - feels like what they were going for on the prior albums but didn't quite get there.

Audiobooks at 1.5x speed always. I’d say I probably ready at 50-70 pages an hour, depending, when talking physical/eBook.

  26. Helloelloallo liked OwainGlyndwr's post in the thread Book The Fantasy/Sci-Fi Books Thread.

Depends on the book for me. Most epic fantasy or science fiction, say something like Stormlight, is about 70 pages an hour. Stuff like Tolkien and Williams is slower; thrillers, YA, and easier books tend to be faster. Hard to be accurate with how wildly page counts fluctuate, but I’m gonna say about 350–400 words/minute for me personally. An hour of recorded audio tends to be about 9k words, so about 30 pages, again depending on format. I try to read an hour a day and I tend to average 2 books per week, with some of those being manga/comics/shorter works.

If a band who isn't on tour announces a red rocks or an NYC show, assume it's a ploy to drive demand to sell those venues out at insane prices before dropping the rest of the dates. I'm not saying that places like red rocks / radio city aren't deserving of special attention / trips, but it's just another marketing tactic to be coy about if you're on tour or not so people think they need to make a destination trip. The answer is most always going to be 'they're on tour' so just wait for your city.

  31. Helloelloallo replied to the thread Book The Fantasy/Sci-Fi Books Thread.

What is everyone's average reading speed? I feel like a page a minute (so 60 an hour) is pretty fast and anything more is almost venturing into speed reading. I know listening to an audio book for an hour doesn't even get you close to 60 pages. So an hour a day for reading means at the best, a 1000 page book is like a 2 week experience.

RE Someone who can - Very, very different from the last song they released that I loved so much, but I also like this one a lot too. Basically devoid of all the proggy and off beat timing that hooked me on the last single, and a more simple 'catchy' vibe but I dig it. Some cool guitar / synths and a great vocal performance from the beginning of the 1st verse. Wish I was going to be able to make this tour with TBS but at the moment can't commit to it.
