Don't even see an argument for any of his worst songs being on Damn. "Lust," maybe, because of that one part? But he's got some weirdo shit like that on every album lol

My argument would be that I don't think there's anything more inherently "sensible" about a review (or post) saying it's an incredible and one of the best albums (like say that Stereogum piece) vs saying something may grow on you. I find both positions totally sensible on a spectrum of fandom and music experience. Said another way: Moderation of emotion isn't inherently more sensible/right/more likely to be right for one's reaction to art. Each reaction can be just as a real, and one isn't more right/more wrong because of the strength of that emotion. If your enjoyment of a piece of art gets graphed over time, you may see dips, peaks, valleys, but probably never a flat line for something you end up listening to often. I don't think anyone at any point on that journey is more or less sensible. (My second argument might be those experiencing and expressing that ride are probably more attuned to their thoughts and feelings on the music.) Edit: And this is, funny enough, something that's kind of an evolution of my own thinking on how I view albums/fitting into my musical history/pantheon, etc. over time. Definitely now how I would have viewed things 20 years ago.

I haaaaaaated DD when it came out, like it kinda killed my enjoyment of the band as a whole for a while to be completely honest lol. just where I was at with my tastes at the time and being a rather edgy teenager, I just completely balked at the brighter and poppier sonic direction and the whole aesthetic of the era. after the lengthy wait it was pretty much the exact opposite of what I wanted from the band at the time. I eventually went back to it in 2022 in preparation for seeing them and I did end up appreciating it more but I still am not a fan of most of the first half of the record. for whatever reason I start to enjoy the album a lot more from Party Poison onwards. I still wouldn’t put most of the songs on that back half up with their best work, with the exception being Summertime, but I do think it’s an enjoyable listen. on another note, I picked up Hesitant Alien on vinyl from a record store a few months back and that was quite a delight to revisit honestly. I personally like it more than DD and probably CW as well.

The vinyl package for this is really nice. Always hesitant around the "white guy, Eastern spirituality" vibes but the artwork inside the gatefold has lots of aliens and Devil's Tower artwork and a couple of Mickey Mouses coming out of a vat of acid with guns lmao. There's also a poem(?) on the insert I can transcribe and post later if people are interested. I haven't Googled it yet, so I'm unsure if it's his or not. My Vertigo Vinyl variant looks great.

I adore Honeybear, but I do think that next to GFC, this is some of his strongest and most mature, well-rounded songwriting. It really does feel career-spanning both in that sense and in style

Yup - music journalists want artists to be themselves in interviews and then they criticize them when they are and that’s why most big publication interviews suck now

I didn’t get into him until around pure comedy and I never understood the “I can’t stand him” thing?

I feel like he's leaned on the irony schtick a lot less since Pure Comedy was so divisive and now pretty much seems to just be having fun online
