Sorry everyone this was a lie. I've never been married or divorced. Mum says it's because I have a bad personality.

God damn, I endured all that to make as well-reasoned argument as humanly possible for the band’s return. and then we saw some of the grossest and most illogical reasoning ever displayed to the point I almost want to change my view lmao I just can’t with any of this. I’m grabbing a beer and putting on that weird new Andrew Dost album (metal bubble trio) that had me head boppin earlier and enjoying Friday. Cheers to y’all that brought thoughtful points to the table.

You won't believe this but many publicly known survivors have been being harassed by Brand New fans which has limited their online presence Brand New has said nothing about this

totally respect that, and can see in this thread, my view of supporting a return is the minority. I just don’t want called names for having a different opinion. That’s it. Especially when I agree Jesse sucks. The survivors views should definitely be heard loud and clear, if they so wish for it to be. Have they said anything since the initial time they shared their stories?

all fair takes, man. Maybe fading into the background prevented more, but you’d be wildly speculating. Was there not over a decade(?) of him in the scene without any reports of it happening again? (tbf, sexual assault is drastically underreported). Over 1m people listen each month on Spotify, I think Jesse has had opportunity to reach out to young fans online if his previous addictions were not rehabilitated. Though, I’m not so dense as to think opportunity won’t be increased being an active band. You seem to think he’s likely to commit crimes again and you personally don’t feel like his public apology and show of remorse was sufficient. I think 20 years with no evidence of repeating his actions are sufficient enough to be given another chance as a band. I believe his infrastructure for support are greatly enhanced from when he committed his crimes. Your opinion on redemption not being possible is surely a fair one too, given the nature of what he did. We appear to wholeheartedly agree on most things personally about Jesse Lacey. I just feel differently about his ability to perform going forward. You’re not automatically arguing with a low IQ pervert because we have different views on one aspect of this situation. Neither of us is more “correct” than the other, remember that.

It’s not. It’s the time passed, and more importantly, the time passed with no indication of him repeating the gross behaviors. Despite earning high income, his family sticking with him indicates to me he’s working on himself and taken steps to reform. At least, based on the information we have, that’s the best decision I can make. Jesse’s crime was not playing music for money, so it is not similar when I agree that Madoff should have never been allowed to manage money again. Music gave him a platform to more easily connect with younger women. But I do make a distinction between his role as an artist and his crime. I can still easily see how some do not, and respect that view.

Group 1: thinks what’s Jesse ago did decades ago are reprehensible, criminal acts that victimized young girls and abused his position of power. He also did not publicly show enough remorse. Due to this, he should not be given back the platform he took advantage of. Group 2: thinks what Jesse ago did decades ago are reprehensible, criminal acts that victimized young girls and abused his position of power. Recognizes that his platform gave him power, but believes in another chance, considering the time that has elapsed. Does not believe that his method for earning income should be permanently reduced, despite his previous criminal acts being tied to his status. Since I belong to group 2, I was labeled as a pervert, a pedophile defender, and it was even suggested that it was concerning if I were to coach youth sports. People are rightfully passionate about condemning sexual abusers, but resorting to personal insults when confronted with a different opinion is elitist and counterproductive. If you can’t see that absolutism hinders healthy discussion, reevaluate your stance.

Even "he lost his career" isn't a thing in this case since they were actively trying to retire lol. He faced literally not one consequence other than 4% of his fanbase thinks he's a creep now. Nothing.

Well articulated and thoughtful post. You raised some great points about his lack of facing it head on. I also heard some great thoughts about his likelihood to commit the same acts again being greater than I gave credence to. I believe it’s a fair debate whether restriction from your greatest earning power is the most effective way forward for criminals, but this thread opened my eyes to just how intertwined they are in this specific case. I personally believe he deserves another opportunity given the time passed and the little we know about his mindset today, but you’re so right - he’s done nothing to earn it.

You're talking about "danger to reoffend" as if he faced actual consequences for his behaviour, which he hasn't. He has never addressed the allegations of grooming or the ages of his reported victims, and he has done zero to support those victims as they dealt with backlash from fans. You're talking about "rehab" - my brother, this man can't even publicly acknowledge the actual issues. The closest he's come is one statement about being a bad person, cheating, and having a sex addiction, which are not the things people are upset about. Also, I think it's a mistake to base your support of Jesse on the actions of his friends and family. They have publicly stood by him the entire time. Because, again, he's faced almost no real consequences. If you want to see him live, do it. But do so knowing this public figure has done nothing publicly to earn your trust, make amends, or reconcile with the past.

Appreciate the debate. It’s not something (generally) people can just choose to stop doing / wanting. I have been struggling to find an analogy that isn’t trivial but yeah putting that temptation in front of him wouldn’t be the wisest. Obviously not saying he DEFINITELY would, but you’d be much better erring on the side of caution

I personally don't think I'd be shocked. Asked it so hopefully @CoachBalke would become aware that people remaining friends with someone, particularly someone who could be a cash-cow, is not compelling evidence of anything.

Immensely value your opinion over mine here, I’m leaning only on what we have seen publicly with his family and band supporting him. Putting him in a volatile environment may be the wrong move. I think it’s a fair debate to have.

totally respect that view. I don’t believe there is a danger to reoffend, which is why I am ok with the platform being returned. But I get the unease. if he’s not reformed, this is all a moot point and he should be in jail.

Don’t be fucking dense. Everyone thinks his behavior was reprehensible. The debate I tried to engage, was whether we believe in someone’s right to second chances after rehabilitation. And whether we should malign those who think differently?

you’re getting snarky with me for no reason haha I think what Jesse did is disgusting, immoral, and I will forever think negatively of him. I have not defended Jesse or his sexual misconduct toward minors. I lean on the actions of his family and friends to judge whether he is reformed, what else do we have? I brought to question where we believe rehabilitation is possible and whether people should be given second chances. Seems like there’s a healthy divide of opinions on it. I don’t think people need ridiculed for thinking differently on his right to perform as an artist, just as much as one should be maligned for saying he shouldn’t be able to, or that it’s gross to perform.

hey man, maybe there was something I missed from the OG allegations that you interpret as making him a continued danger to young girls online. But if not, it’s possible we just have different views, that’s all.

agreed. he has and will continue to suffer the financial consequences of a reduced audience. If they once again sell out huge venues, not everyone in there is a bad person. Remember, the line between rehabilitation being feasible and actions being unforgivable is a personal decision we all make. Some of you speak with the bravado that those with different viewpoints are simply wrong. thanks for the relatively level headed discourse all around. Some good points connected with me. The fans will ultimately decide if he is allowed back.

this makes no sense to me, unless you think he is a danger to re-offend. Every job has power imbalances. If you feel like he will once seek out sexually driven online relationships with girls under 18, that’s your right. From the little I know, I don’t see a danger to society. I don’t see a debt unpaid. And I don’t see a reason not to be able to once again pursue his life long passion and earn income from it.

where the line is drawn between something unforgivable that renders a person ineligible to earn a living and recognizing that someone can change decades later and deserves another chance? All of us arbitrarily draw that line with the best of our moral intentions, but many of you seem to forget that it is indeed an individual baseline. It’s everyone’s right to think of him what they want, but the behavior Jesse (allegedly) exhibited is a stretch to call pedophilia given his age at the time. “A psychiatric disorder in which an adult or older adolescent experiences a primary or exclusive sexual attraction to prepubescent children.” That doesn’t seem to be the case here and the laissez-faire way some of you throw around the term is concerning. It’s wild to me that for some of you, looping in the other band members as equally at fault is a valid argument as if they should be forced to suffer financially too. There’a no disputing Jesse committed sexual misconduct toward vulnerable younger people that left a lasting negative impact. Decades later, does that mean he shouldn’t able to earn a living and, especially, that people can’t support the band without ridicule? I don’t think so, based on the entire argument we make as a society for rehabilitation being possible. His wife, children, and friends seem to believe he isn’t a danger any longer and has changed his mindset. He addressed it and apologized and set to work on himself in private. He needs to continue to prove it’s true. It’s totally fair for people to write him off forever, but some of these holier than thou comments are tough to read.
