Sigh. This again. Skiba’s whole schtick is being dark and edgy. Pair that with an interest in Nordic runes and the Occult, and you’re on shaky ground. Do I wish he would be more conscious of the imagery he uses and the media he promotes? Yes. Do I think he’s a Nazi? No, but he needs to do better in terms of the company he keeps, which he has. He cut ties with both Douglas P. and Boyd Rice many years ago. I will say, his support of military and police is disappointing, though I feel it may be inherited from his parents, who are both veterans. Skiba himself is also a volunteer firefighter. His friendship with Boyd Rice is indefensible. I believe this can be attributed to Skiba being an industrial music fan and thus, overlooking problematic behaviour from Rice. The same can be said for Trent Reznor. Does that justify it? Of course not. Boyd Rice repulses me and I'm disappointed in the many artists that have had an association with him. Douglas P. of Death in June is a little more complex. Douglas is an openly gay man and members of Death in June are Jewish, so he most certainly does not fit into the traditional Nazi category. Douglas claims that his use of the totenkopf and other problematic imagery is an effort of “reclamation” - hence the pride flag embroidered with a totenkopf he displays onstage. Clearly, this effort of “reclamation” has not been successful. A bigger issue is the vagueness in Death in June’s lyrics, especially with the amount of WWII references. Interestingly, such behaviour has been documented decades before. Joy Division, Sex Pistols, Queen, Throbbing Gristle, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and New Order all used problematic imagery that was stolen by the Nazis, but originated from the Occult, Satanism, or Paganism. It was shocking then and it's shocking now. Personally, I think it's all pretty dumb and I wish artists would refrain from using such imagery. TLDR: Skiba is not a Nazi.

What's wild is having this explained to you multiple different ways, very eloquently, and still shaking your head and being like "nah - witch hunt." I hate that shit.
