    The rivalry is back on

I don't think having a good RB hurts, but outside of Seattle and Baltimore, the Super Bowl champs this decade haven't really been led by blue chippers.

I think having a semi-functional run game is more important than investing heavily there

That's where I'm at. Obviously having an abysmal run game won't help. But investing top-10 picks in it seems too rich for me.

It has to be noted that CMC is not a traditional between the tackles runningback though. While he elevates the run game, he's used in lots of different ways.

People say Atlanta choked the Super Bowl but forget that Tevin Coleman went down with an injury during the game and that's when the momentum shift really began. They couldn't make those up the gut runs and as a result they couldn't sustain drives.

Carolina needs to be able to keep weight off their between the tackles back. McCaffrey helps that.

I get that, and he is a unique case because of his versatility. But of his multiple skill sets, some I devalue, the RB side of things, some are being phased out of the game like his kick return ability. I would have preferred to see them trade down and go O-Line.

You can only trust a QB if it feels right to trade your current 1st, 2nd, next years 1st and your former starting QB. Not sure Kizer feels THAT right.

I get that on paper he's a bit of an undersized RB, and that's why there is this misconception that he can't be an every down back, or that he isn't a between the tackles RB. When you look at the numbers, I don't get how you can make that argument. Below is an excerpt from an article discussing this topic:

There's another stat I saw that said 60% of his carries were inside runs, and he averaged 4.9 ypc on those inside runs (better than Fournette and Cook).

He may not be a traditional power back, but he certainly can run between the tackles, and is an every down back. He shows patience and waits for his blocks to develop and has the quickness to cut back when he sees a hole open up. He also ran in a system that consisted of a wide variety of runs (inside and outside zone runs, power-i, unbalanced line, runs from the shotgun, runs from the wildcat). One of the things Gettleman loved about him was his football IQ and understanding what the OL is doing/supposed to be doing. That is why he is so patient in the backfield. He waits for the hole to open up and then uses his quickness to burst through. I'm not saying he'll be as good as Le'Veon Bell, but someone else on here used that comparison and it works as far as his style of running.

Framing the argument as super bowl excludes a lottttt of teams though. Why not look at overall playoff success?

All I know is the Jags have limited playoff seasons... but since 1999 every year we've made it has been because Fred Taylor or MJD legit took over most our games at the time.

You need to be great at passing the ball to beat other high octane passing teams - usually you have to face at least one "gatekeeper" offensively dominant team with an elite QB to get to the Super Bowl.

But as far as just establishing the consistency and balance necessary to be a team that isn't easy to gamelan against? As far as keeping the ball more and giving opponents less opportunities while your own offense can settle down and while your defense can rest? The running game might be a faster track to success than anything else.

I limited it to Super Bowls because that's the end goal. If everything you're doing isn't to achieve that goal than what's the point?

  16. I get what you're saying but there's no one set way to win a SB. Just because a team drafts a RB doesn't mean they're only focused on the run game or trying to shy away from passing as much. Also, Carolina went 15-1 and made it to the SB with a heavy focus on a power run scheme. Sure, Cam made some big passing plays but our identity was great defense and a solid run game.

Panthers move was not just to improve the run game. They drafted two hybrids for a reason. Their offense is becoming slow and predictable and they are fully aware that they are wasting Cam.

    Also, Seattle.

    Nope. Supporter

So I just read an article on PFT saying how unfair it is for college players being drafted by a team and having no say in where they go. While I don't necessarily agree with that sentiment, it does bring up an interesting point.

Would they NFL ever get to a point, kind of similar to foreign prospects signing in MLB, where top college players would not subject themselves to the draft and sign anywhere they want as UDFA and negotiate bigger contracts?

Certainly not. If the NFL gave a shit about being good they'd have a minor league already.

Also, how fun would it be if coaches didn't have that luxury and you had to draft them instead?

The way the MLB works is without a salary cap though, along with salary for their draft picks. It would be really bad for the NFL if you couldn't just pick the best players on such giant rosters.

Yeah I personally think it would be a shitshow and especially with the salary cap it would be a nightmare. I guess you could have slotted amounts you can spend
