The deluxe songs. California at least had some memorable melodies

Yeah I could agree with you there. While I like Misery and 6/8 I don't think the melodies are memorable.

Risky or different would be something that had me saying "wait, that's Blink" - only time I really had that reaction was the first time heard I Miss You. To go from the sound of TOYPAJ to that was a HUGE shift in sound.

I think you can say that about the whole Untitled album though. It was such a different direction from the band from the Enema/TOYPAJ sound. If you put any of the Untitled songs on Enema or TOYPAJ they would stand out.

I wasn't even excited for another new deluxe track so I didn't check it yesterday... a friend kept begging me to check it out and DANG. Better than all of California for me... they're finally doing something different again!

"6/8" might be my favorite Blink song since the self-titled... really wasn't expecting it at all!

  15. I hate to be "that guy" but mannnn there's just something about this era of the band that isn't hitting me the way I expected it to. Like, there's just something missing and not connecting with me somehow. I don't know if it's the lack of Tom's voice or the addition of Matt or John's production or something else completely, but there's just some sort of disconnect and I just can't put my finger on it! I feel like I can't compare it to any of the band's prior work for some reason. Gah! It's weird. I WANT to LOVE it because they've been my number one favorite band since like 1998, and I've always (and most likely will always) eat up anything this band or its members do, but yeah, there's just something not connecting with me the same way as their previous stuff did and still does.

Even Neighborhoods felt weird to me. I listened to that album on repeat for SO long just trying to fall in love with it. There's certain songs on Neighborhoods that I love, but overall, I didn't like it.

Dogs Eating Dogs was a step up from that to me, and it felt like a promising direction that I was hoping to see on the next full length.

Most of California felt like it was a band trying to put out an album that sounded like Enema of the State. I love most of the album even more than DED and Neighborhoods combined, but yeah, I don't even really know what else to say. It just feels different somehow, sort of like it's a band imitating Blink-182 so you'd think I'd love it, but it's just not the real deal or something, or it feels forced? I don't even know, people!!!

This is my cry for help! HELP! hahaha. Am I alone in this, or does any other die hards in here secretly feel the same way??? It's bumming me RIGHT OUT! I like "Misery" a lot, and also "6/8" but they don't really feel like Blink songs to me, whatever that even means.

I'll still listen to whatever songs leak next, and I will still buy the Deluxe the first chance I get on the day it comes out. Blink-182 is still my #1 but grrrrrrrrrrr something just feels off.

@bradsonemanband I'm right there with you man. Have been thinking this for a while. I can't quite put my finger on it either. Whether I'm in my 20's and it's 2017 and they're in their 40's, or if it's missing Tom/the addition of Matt/Feldmann. Idk. I love Matt, and think he's super talented and has brought great life to the band live and everything, but I feel like even he isn't being allowed to properly shine. It just feels different. Feels like I waited for the band I loved to come back, and they didn't really come back in 2009, or 2011 with Neighborhoods, or the album that was supposed to come out after that, or this new iteration. It's weird.

  18. I'M LOSIN IT!!!! haha. I just want to LOVE this stuff because it sounds like how I'd want Blink-182 to sound, but it just doesn't feel like Blink-182. Like it's someone else putting out music that I wish was just Blink.... if that makes sense? haha

  19. @bradsonemanband you're not wrong. I rock the fuck out of everything new, I still love blink and consider them my #1, I'll go to all the shows and everything, but I'm right there with you. It's the punchiness of everything that seems to be lost. I think that's why i LOVED Parking Lot. I think it was a lot of what I felt was missing. It's likely the loss of Jerry, the age of the members, and the machine that is now blink. I'm not mad, just also kinda not the same as I was back in the day. We'll always have this thread, and reddit, and Facebook to fall back on!

I definitely feel the same way @bradsonemanband
I know for a fact if these songs were a random band I wouldn't listen again but since it's blink I try to love it

  21. Exactly!

And like, I wouldn't really expect Blink to sound any different than this, which is what's so confusing.

I agree about California. In a way, I kind of respect the effort that Feldmann put into just studying the discography and including everything (even Tom's AVA style vocals, I guess), but it's like, I don't really just want a rehashed Frankenstein's monster of a record from a band I love, I want something of substance.

I feel like lyrically, it kind of falls apart too. I know there's the argument that their lyrics have never been very poetic or anything, but I would kind of disagree. They had great emotive lyrics about relationships and stuff from like Dude Ranch - Untitled (obviously barring some VERY surface level songs), but a lot of these songs feel so surface level and impersonal that it's hard to latch on to anything really. Musically, She's Out of Her Mind is pretty fun, but I don't really listen to it because it's so on the surface. Lol it's like the girl in the song doesn't even have a name. I know it shouldn't bother me, but it does. On the other hand, while not being Nick Cave lyrics or whatever, I feel like Cynical, BTD (to an extent) and San Diego kind of explore actual feelings/situations a little deeper. 6/8 to me is "dark" and everything, but I wish Mark were a little more particular in his lyrics, and not just using broad metaphors. Wow sorry for the rant.

    Brad, what have you started???

This goes for California as well. The album is just not very good. I wanted to like it so bad, but I just couldn't. It's why I actually despise the album instead.
