yup. one of the reasons it's taken me a bit to give him that GOAT status that everyone else was so hype to throw on GKMC. He's always lacking coherent, decent hooks on his music. he might have 2-3 per release but he tends to make some irritating shit in addition to the gems.

You can't touch the dude on a verse and what he's saying is clearly important, which is probably why so many people give him a pass in the hook department. This album falls off a bit in that regard after Love

I don't understand how it "doesn't make sense"? They're all popular hip hop artists. DRAM has been on some of the biggest hits in the past two years, Kendrick is top 3 most famous rappers out, Travi$ has been bubbling for years. It's going to draw a huge crowd.

I love a lot of Kendrick's hooks tbh. People were complaining about Fear and Lust's hooks, meanwhile those are some of my favorite moments on the album. To each their own I guess

I guess the weird thing about it is: If you don't feel like DRAM and Travimoneysign Scott fit as the openers, who DOES fit?

personally i don't think a hook is necessary for rap, especially not necessarily a sung hook. also depends on how we're saying "hook" i guess, like i regard the blacker the berry as having a hook (and a great one) but otherwise yeah his work mostly eschews them - i think that's more meddlesome on works like damn where it's a lot less spontaneously and diversely produced

I'd count that as a hook

But he honestly includes a LOT of hooks, it's just that since they're not that good they may not be thought of as hooks (think Rigamortus for a perfect example)

I actually like most of his hooks. Only ones I'm not that into are Real and Institutionalized

Hooks are good for songs in any genre, and an underrated art form

  13. Travis and DRAM makes a lot of sense, not huge on Travis but I've heard his shows are a lot of fun and I can get down with that. Hoping to get Barclays tickets.

DRAM's rap-heavy verses are fantastic. Dude can rip a track in half or sing heavenly over it, however he so pleases. I would listen to his album and then queue a few songs he guests on (particularly 1999-- thats a banger)

That's a lineup that will fill these stadiums. Great planning by TDE

Of course Kendrick and Travi$ is a huge draw, and I'm happy for DRAM.

This was never meant to be an argument and I find it strange that it moved in that direction. I'll be at either the Philly or Brooklyn show, can't wait to see what Kenny's got planned.

The Weeknd did on this upcoming tour. I really want to go but it's fucking ridiculous

Also Travis Scott is dope and super hype live so I'm looking forward to this entire lineup

Master of not knowing what the hell I'm doing.

Kinda unrelated but damn you guys get shafted on ticket prices. In the UK seated and standing are always the same price and the maximum arena shows cost really is £50/$65.

I chuckled but this shtick is getting old tbh. I know your whole "don't rush to call Kendrick the GOAT" argument stems at least partly from a more nuanced conversation about race but on some level it just feels like the elitism that plagued any type of online music discussion (including here!) 10-15 years ago. In some ways that seems more damaging to me than the mild hyperbole of someone for whom Kendrick (or Future, or Kanye) might be the entry point to a genre.

To address a separate point, I kinda disagree on the hooks at least in regards to GKMC. The choruses on that album are very strong imo. That this album has gone back to that well at least in part makes TPAB a stranger listen now, it's still the most impressive to me beginning to end but short of the obvious exception of Alright it's almost impossible for me to just throw on a random handful of tracks from it.

I'm not saying that people who aren't really into the genre/new to the genre should not talk about it. I'm saying it's problematic and harmful for large masses of people to tout one specific artist/album as the greatest ever while dismissing other types of art from the same field. The constant search for the "GOAT" in hip hop is regressive, it's harmful. And a lot of it is coming from people who are just culture vulturing the genre to begin with.

That's fair, I think I misunderstood your stance a bit.

No GA floor (and no good seats in general on the boston presale) is a bummer. And kind of doesn't make sense either, I feel like he's always really encouraged that kind of crowd experience.

First time I saw Kendrick he did crowdwork like he was a standup act or something and also grabbed some kid from the crowd and gave him a mic for "Look Out For Detox"
