Our contractor is a family friend (I'm the best friend of the groom at his niece's wedding in May). Without that, I wouldn't feel comfortable with this at all. It's a small, cheap townhouse. Bought it for 104. The renovations should only take two weeks or so. The painter is my sister-in-law's father. I'm basically getting people I trust to do all the work for me at a good rate and then moving in once the whole thing is done. The house is empty, so everything should be settled by late May and I'll officially move in around then.

Yeah, both sets of their parents are like neurologists and other doctors. They would def not be able to afford it otherwise. I'm going to ring her neck if she picks out an expensive ass bridesmaid dress.

 

Yeah, I had to learn how to lay flooring, use power tools (neither big deals nor that time consuming, but also two skills I never really had/wanted to have), paint 70% of the interior of the house, stain 80% of the deck, how to re-hang cabinets, how to lay baseboards + quarter-round, seal new tile floors and where they meet tubs, plug holes in drywall... and we're still not done. Ugh. I'm jealous you have contractors.

 

You gotta watch out for those people whose parents are both doctors

This place is 2.5 bedrooms, 1 bath. Built 80 years ago. 1200 sq ft. Adjoining neighbors on both sides. It's not much. Plus it was an estate, so the whole house needs to be updated.

 

What's it like to live like the 1% ?

 

Every time I think about moving, I remember that Knoxville is one of the cheapest places to live in the US and I still can't afford to live on my own here and go back to just not thinking about not living in my mom's basement.

Rent isn't too high here but my rent in college was dirt cheap so it sucked to lose that.
