I still like this even better than 7. It's as good as I can hope future star wars films can be.

Well, it does explain why Gareth Edwards' movies work so much more visually than they do as emotional or involving stories about characters.

I agree with you. Visually this film went above and beyond. I'm waiting for the day Ill be emotionally connected to any star wars character. I'm just there to see the weird universe personally.

  6. If you have the opinion that is true, then yes that would be way to confirm your belief. If you don't (I don't), then it doesn't explain anything at all. But then I think shrinking down an entire director and their work into 10 second interview clip is cherry picking at its finest.

The problem with Rogue One is there's no character development. I still enjoy it a lot, but I would love it if it made me feel for Jyn and Cassian what TFA did for its leads

Looks like I'm seeing this at a drive-in tonight. Then of course buying it in a week and a half

  8. Any? I mean ... you may be dead inside if you can watch Empire and not be emotionally connected. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The emotional, visual storytelling in the original trilogy's lightsaber duels is near-unmatched action moviemaking.

Yep. I might be hahaha. Definitely no emotional connection at all. Love that movie though.

I hate when people say this. Like obviously yes that's true, but there's obviously more effective processes and decisions to make when it comes to storytelling. Saying this is just a way to dismiss criticism.

  12. We disagree. I don't think there's a right or wrong process.

I don't think an effective star wars movie needs emotional connection to characters. And I don't think Rogue One felt "plotted incorrectly" or that theres a right way to do it. It was an actual coherent blockbuster which apparently now is an extremely rare commodity.

  15. I get sad when the droid dies ... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ... I'm the wrong person to talk abut emotional connection with I think.

Do or do not, there is no try.

Same. I was sad at K2, I was sad for Jyn and Galen, felt joy after the Rebel meet when Cassian had formed a squad to go to to Scariff.. the list goes on.

Gareth is also really talking about this scene specifically and how it came together, because he really wanted it. The entire movie probably wasn't structured in such a manner. Wish people on the internet would do research before criticising a movie and it's director off the back of a cropped interview. Sigh, the internet.

The process doesn't matter all that matters is the final product. I feel that way about pretty much any piece of art.

  18. It feels like a pre-conceived narrative driving the facts.

(Also, that scene is fantastic, so, whatever process he used to make it so, I don't care at all. Good for him.)

Process absolutely matters, but plenty of different processes can lead to quality results. I do think envisioning big setpieces and constructing a story around them before developing character and theme has potential to be problematic. It's basically how Zack Snyder, Michael Bay, and J.J. Abrams operate.

Easily in my top 5 scenes.

I know it's just one of his movies but seen as we are taking Star Wars - J.J. built TFA around the question "Who is Luke Slywalker?" and how his story would continue and his character develop.

I don't have a problem with the quote. It's not like he said that he comes up with big pretty pictures, and bullshits his way into them.

And this is coming from someone who thought Rogue One was bang average.

He's better at character than the other two names and it helps that he's one of the best eyes for casting in Hollywood. But I have issues with how some of his films are built and constructed, for him it's less about big action setpieces but more cool-seeming mystery and big "moments", that I think he inconsistently earns.

  24. These are contradictory statements. When infinite processes can lead to quality, then it's not the process that matters.

But doesn't guarantee it, which again, is the entire point. The potential for an outcome doesn't mean it's the wrong way to do it or to not do it. It also doesn't prove causality.

This is just thrown in as a jab at directors you don't like, but that's all it says: you don't like these directors. It doesn't prove that your argument is true, that it's a failure of directing, movie-making, or anything, or that it's even bad. Hell, for many, this argues against you — because people really fucking like some of those movies and what they set out to achieve, and the end result.

  25. But that doesn't fit the narrative! Heh. Also, feel bad for how Kasdan and Arndt get shut out of the writing of that movie when people want to shit on Abrams.
