I just was never into "noise rock" and the all over the place-ness and the lyrics are a little weaker IMO than TDAG, and I don't connect with many of them the way younger me did with their earlier albums, etc.

Mene is what Daisy should ahve sounded like if they were gonna be loud....I like being able to understand the lyrics and what not.

Noise Rock is a perfect way to describe it. I can see bands beginning that way and getting softer and more focused. Brand New took a very different route.

I guess this thread works in cycles but just saying again Daisy is a fantastic album. Better than Deja easily, YFW isn't even in the running, and Devil and God is equally good in a different way. Would argue Daisy is all the more interesting for it's hostility bc it does so via what is on the surface conventional song structure and in practice is actually more subversive than that.

  6. It does have "Bed" and the band's worst lyrics though, so that isn't great for any "better than Deja" argument..

The bands worst lyrics are found on like YFW or my nine rides shotgun or something. I love Deja, but a good chunk of those songs have them firmly entrenched in a comfort zone. That's fine, it is literally in the title, but Daisy has more variety and it's all done better while still sticking to their strengths structurally and expanding their sound.

I've got nothing for "Bed" because I like that song and I just can't argue with subjectivity as broad as like or dislike

  8. I would give a millions of dollars to go back in time and tell Brand New fans that Deja was the band entrenched in a "comfort zone" in 2003. I'd also argue against Daisy having variety, but that lack was always the point of the album.

Hey @Jason Tate ! What do you think of all the hate YFW gets these days?

Vices is just such a good way to open up an album.

They stepped up their songwriting from YFW, no question, and the best songs on that album don't have that problem. But at least half of those songs definitely stick too closely to conventional pop structures imo. It feels like it doesn't quite reach where it wants to go. An album that came out the same year and doesn't have that problem but I feel mines very similar territory is Cursive's the Ugly Organ. I think that can sort of show what my perspective is a bit

  12. It's a very good pop-punk album with some some very "ew" lyrics in quite a few places. Where it stretches outward it's as good as any other pop-punk album out there though, despite the clunkers. "Soco" and "No Seatbelt" and "Jude Law" are as good as the genre has produced. It's similar to TTTYG in that I don't listen to it very much, but when I do, I remember why it was so popular and resonated with so many people.

"Failure by Design" still really sucks though. Haha.

I think those of us that grew up with Brand New understood that YFW was the mood of the time. I almost think had Daisy or TDAGRIM came out then, it wouldn't even have made sense to anyone at the time.

No one was trying to become the next Fall Out Boy. There was Blink 182 and Green Day. Then there was just trying to get noticed in your local Firemen's Hall or concert hall. Then you'd join up with a bunch of scene bands and tour for 15 dollar shows. I don't think anyone foresaw Brand New putting out masterpieces.

Idk if YFW goes through a lot of "hate". It's their weakest album. No doubt about it. That being said I still like the album for what it is.

  15. I mean, virtually all of the band's song structures are basic, and conventional, pop song structures. Just 'cause they yell on Daisy doesn't change how formulaically simple those structures are.

  16. Worship and Tribute was one of the biggest scene albums of 2002. Not sure I agree with that.

Deja Entendu bores the shit out of me now. I don't know if it's because I listened to it so much when it came out or what happened, but I definitely reach for Daisy more these days. Obviously, TDAG gets the most love.

  18. I don't listen to any of the albums except for maybe twice a year for a fun throwback. So much great music out there all the time, so much more to discover, I got more than enough play of the Brand New albums when they were a real active band. Always fun to go back though. None of them "bore" me ...

Probably just my personal experience. As a 16 year old me and my friends weren't there yet and couldn't stand it so, I know I personally grew with it and a lot of others did. I kind of grew and stretched from only New Found Glory/Drive-Thru/Taking Back Sunday styled pop-punk with Brand New, Underoath, Thrice, Finch to being able to enjoy heavier stuff. Glassjaw had a big following though, I couldn't handle them at the time.

Probably not the right word I suppose, but whenever something pops up from it I skip it. I can't remember the last time I listened to it in full. I do, however, play "Play Crack the Sky" whenever I pick up my guitar. I don't know what that's all about.

You're right, but I'm definitely not arguing that yelling makes a difference because it isn't like Deja doesn't have it's fair share of that. On Daisy it's not as "by the book" with those structures. It's not reinventing the wheel necessarily but it alters those structures enough to make them way more interesting. Like "Noro" for example is basically just an extended jam, but it works better than it does on "Good to Know..." because they know when to cut it and when too much of one thing is too much. I know people don't really like it, but "Be Gone" just musically is really interesting on the basis of taking the extended jam and extending a part idea from songs like "Noro" and minimizing it to the simplest thing it can be. I think you can reasonably compare "Sic Transit Gloria" to "Vices" in what they aim to do, but I think the latter is more successful because it works at making atonality and jarring dynamics into hooks, where the former relies more on the surprise of being different sounding from a YFW track. I think there are moments that they change just enough that they aren't completely by the book, even if it's still a verse a chorus etc.
At the end of the day I still love both for different reasons, I just enjoy one more

  22. I'll take "Sic Transit" in any race against "Vices."

  23. Haha. I skip everything basically from 2010 and back unless I pick it specifically, so I get that.

I had to get up, put down my phone and pick up my laptop so I could properly reply to this post. I can't believe anyone hates Failure by Design. It's such a jam! Haven't listened to in years, had to put it on after you gave it such a punch in the balls. I hope you're joking 'cause I'm rocking out to that song right this second.
