I don't think I like a single post-reunion song better than anything off of Dude Ranch - Untitled (S/T w/e shut up), and most of the non joke tracks on CC or Buddha. I'd take the underdeveloped raw fucking around on their first few releases over the bubblegum nonsense they've been putting out.

Yeah I've seen from a few places that Blink will be one of the 8 headliners at Lolla this year.

I'm hoping Lorde, The Weeknd, or The xx will play on the same day as blink, but I have a feeling their set times would overlap.

Yeah I've always hated Lollapalooza because they always have 2 headliners playing at the same time, along with like 3 other higher billed undercard acts.

I believe he takes the Queen Mary and that takes 7 days, which is the fastest via cruise right now according to my Google machine.

Ready for another new song. Give me. Give me. Give me.

I feel like I deserve it after dropping $50 on the deluxe edition vinyl. Most I've ever allowed myself to spend on a pre-order. Probably never again. Skiba is lucky I'm a fan and that I enjoy him in Blink.

  8. As much as I enjoyed California it is very bubblegumish and that's why I'm surprised I liked it so much. That's my main gripe with Feldman as a producer.

Well, Enema and TOYPAJ were ultra-bubblegum. With a select few exceptions, I just like the songs more than anything post-reunion though.

I think Enema and TOYPAJ were bubblegumish(?) for their time, but comparing those records to California, All Time Low, Mayday Parade, etc. they have a more raw sound.. also, I think Tom gave blink an edge and mark was more poppy to begin with

You're right. Those are both perfectly and timelessly produced. Mostly Enema though. The production on that album is amazing. Especially for its time.

Tom wrote pretty much the most bubblegum-ish song of all time in the genre with ATST. And First Date? I mean I get it if people are bummed that it's nowhere near Untitled (I agree) But this album flat out is not more bubblegum than TOYPAJ. It doesn't get that distinction just because they "whoa" and "na-na" more lol.

I love the production on both I just don't think they sound as polished as some of today's records (but for their time, they were). I'm not dogging California, I love that album.

Something about the guitars on those records sound so good to me. They sound big but they are nice and crisp. On the other hand, the guitars on California sound a little blown out to me. Might be too much compression, but they are just kind of fuzzy, I guess.

As far as using the oh's and na's back then, I feel like we grade them on a different scale nowadays. Using those vocals in place of lead melodies was kind of a novel idea for this specific genre at the time. Fast forward 15 years, and it's been done thousands of times in pop punk. That's how it is with a ton of elements in songwriting. They progressed with their songwriting in the next couple of albums, so we just expect something different from them, is all. It could be thanks to everyone's complaints that Neighborhoods sucked because there were no "bridges with vocals". haha.

Na nas and whoa ohs had been a staple of pop and even punk for ages (I think Tom said he wanted to write a Ramones style song with na nas in All the Small Things).

Jerry Finn really, really sharpened Tom's guitar sound and the polish of blink's vocals. That production is about as poppy as anything you'd hear today. I do think a lot of the flourishes Finn added gave the songs an artful texture and depth, more so than Feldman's, which feel more like bells and whistles to me (not that it's bad, it just doesn't sound as purposeful or enhancing as the stuff they did with Finn). To say nothing of the experimentation with sounds and mics and amps and instruments they collaborated on in untitled. That's the kind of blink I miss most and have accepted is likely gone forever.

There weren't too many "pop punk" acts that pushed that far towards the pop side at the time of blink, though ("sellouts!"). The "whoas" have been a thing used in more aggressive styles of punk from the 90s and back, and the whole "na na" thing had always been a pop thing. I should have clarified that now that's more of a common thing for their peers which is an important distinction.

Yeah listening to Untitled yesterday, nobody is going to make a blink album that sounds as good as he did. Feldmann does a good job but he's much more obvious and simpler. If they tried to jump right into that type of album with Feldmann, I think it would've been an absolute disaster. Finn was just that great.
