Yeah this is exactly my problem with a lot of their new stuff as well... I'm never a big fan of bands in middle age struggling to recapture their youthful energy, unless it can really come naturally. But Blink's old sound was DEFINED by youth and immaturity, so a lot of the attempts to blatantly recapture that just feel forced as hell to me. I don't need to hear 40-year-old multi-millionaires singing "We are forgotten young suburbia". And musically this was duller to me than a lot of the standard edition tracks. Still holding out hope there will be something more for me.

I don't need Tom in the band but I miss what he brought to the sound when he captured it correctly.. Which is funny because I love Skiba lyrically and feel if he brought some of those themes from Trio/theHell/Sekrets etc. to Blink they could write something really, really fun. It feels like they are trying to write Dude Ranch songs in their 40's and it bores me to tears.

I guess I was just hoping for something different out of a Skiba/Hoppus collaboration than what I got.

Edit: Even songs like Cynical.. They are fast, fun songs with simple lyrics but they don't scream like a song written by an old band trying to recapture what made them popular. You can write fun, fast punk music and not have it have to be about skateboarding and hanging into target parking lots. You guys haven't done that in years...stop.

Surprisingly really like the new song. Wasn't expecting much at all to be honest, so says a lot for me to dig it. Hope the rest of the record lives up to it.

Agree 100% with this, they should stop trying to relive the past and put some effort into writing something that feels relevant to them in 2017. Still, I don't mind some nostalgia, or maybe they're just trying to appeal to a new generation in the same way they were incredibly appealing to myself with these themes when I was a bit younger.

But in the end of the day, blink-182 stands out to me when they go beyond what's expected of them and experiment a bit more. Blink with Tom had that potential to write something out of the box, and blink with Skiba has the same drive if we think about how many good songs the 3 of them have already written in their own careers.

Left Alone continues to be the perfect example to me of a song that captured what I was expecting a new blink-182 song would be all about: it's catchy, melodic, has incredible drum parts, clever lyrics, the back and forth between Mark and Skiba works perfectly, and it has that synth/spacey/delayed Delonge-ish guitar vibes that I'll admit I miss a lot.

    Love it the new song.

Not getting all of the negativity. I remember right around DED and Neighborhoods the major complaint was that the don't know how to write fun pop-punk anthems anymore. They are doing that now and people want them to go back to moody soundscapes? Fuck that.

I was always in for the prog-moody soundscapes with blink.

When I saw them in Nashville they did, and it was glorious and fun in that pit with everyone chanting the gang vocals part

1000%. They are so capable of writing great songs and have already proven that. I think this is trying to appeal to the younger generations that they did in the past which I totally understand. That being said... the lyrical themes in lots of these songs are just lacking to me. There are other bands writing these songs out there and writing them better. Songs like Cynical, Bored To Death, San Diego, etc. are more of what I want out of them. Everything else just seems very forced and phoned in. To be honest..I don't want to hear that the songs were written in a week and that they wrote 30+ of them in that time. It doesn't seem like they care much...so why should I?

Your comments are pinning down exactly my thoughts but expressing them better haha... seriously, Matt is capable of bringing something way more interesting to the band lyrically and I just haven't seen that yet. The songs I liked the most on California were the ones where they didn't write about sneaking out to go to the skate park with their friends or whatever shit they pretend they still do lol.

    i wonder if...

    maybe... (just maybe)...

some people didn't like neighborhoods or ded and wanted the pop punk stuff,, and they like california and the new song

while others liked neighborhoods and ded (and untitled if you want to throw that in there),,,, and wanted more of the dark-ish, more existential lyricism, and aren't feeling california or the new song

and maybe (just just maybe, just hear me out) someone is like me and liked untitled a whole lot, and wasn't crazy about neighborhoods or ded, and liked california enough, but isn't super into the new song?

i mean, what if people have a wide range of opinions and feelings and generalizing and conflating different critiques is an empty nonsense talking point?

LOL Feldy's just trolling at this point.

To be fair though, he loves his "Wooahs" and "NaNa's" Even before Blink, Almost every band hes worked with have incorporated them into their songs when he has produced songs for them.

Perhaps... the people criticizing the new stuff aren't the same people who criticized Neighborhoods/DED? That stuff wasn't all great but I'd still take Neighborhoods over most of the new stuff honestly, at least it tried some new things.

Again, these are B-Sides - so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Listen to B Is For B Sides by Less Than Jake...great songs on there, but the majority did not end up on Anthem for a reason.

And yeah, songs like Teenage Satellites does sound like pandering to the young crowd. But it isn't a "Golden Showers In The Golden State" level of terrible.

There's a very big difference between the lyrics to Teenage Satellites and Golden Showers. One is supposed to be taken "seriously"(using that term loosely because blink have never been a "serious" band). The other isn't supposed to be serious
