    So maybe we want to aim for more individually geared posts here and less stuff like "x artist sucks or has no substance"

    people saying "trap music has no substance" is at least verging on outright racism if not explicitly so.

    Not sure what counts as unpopular, but Almost Here by The Academy Is is the best album to come out of the AP "scene", and one of the best pure pop-rock / pop-punk albums ever recorded. Rather than overreaching and missing like some of their peers, TAI just made a fully formed, hook-filled and superbly well-executed album.

    There's nothing "special" or particularly distinctive about it in one sense, but they absolutely perfectly nailed that sort of music in a way that nobody managed since. A little mini-masterpiece and significantly better than anything else their peers ever wrote. I'm not sure that album is underrated, but it's definitely one that takes a little time to warm up too, simply because there's nothing showy or flashy about it, just a collection of extremely well-written songs.

    Shame about what happened after...

    those are substanceless posts that do nothing to start discussion and are literally excuses to slam artists, which i know jason was trying to move away from here

    I don't even know what trap music is tbh. But apparently @Ben Peters' unpopular opinion is that it lacks substance. It's clearly in the spirit of the premise of this thread. But if you think there are racial undertones, I would suggest reporting it to a staff member.

    The trap post is the only one in that list that I think is detrimental

    what a phenomenal record. I mostly agree with you, but i think "Santi", while not as consistent as Almost Here, still has some of the best TAI songs ever written (Seed, Sleeping With Giants)

    Again, I created this thread so that people can let loose without having to argue with someone for 3 pages (ironic) about an opinion. If Jason disagrees I am sure we can discuss it.

    Wouldn't quite agree to this extent, but it's definitely a great, underrated album.

    So tell me something awesome Supporter

    I think if we have it set where people can be so blunt with their opinions we should have it be like "challenge my opinion" where anyone's welcome to give a strong argument against it (as long as it's not condescending). And also keep it from being "artist ruined genre" or "genre has no substance" and make it more "I don't enjoy artist/genre". No ones required to change their opinion of course, but it'd bring better conversation that way in my opinion.

    I agree. More "i don't like this" (and maybe even justification!!!) and less "this is horrible/no substance"

    While I like the self titled, I've never considered it to be the "classic" or "masterpiece" that a lot of people on AP seemed to think it was. The vocals were at an all time low for the band, at that time period and a handful of the songs are just a mess of nonsense - however, I do think they really were able to write SOME great songs that mixed older blink with the new style they were trying for successfully (e.g. stockholm syndrome, always, easy target, here's your letter, GO --even though Mark's vocals were exceptionally bad on this song). Good, not great album, I'd say!

    I guess I just don't see a point in getting so worked up over someone elses opinion that may disagree with theirs, as long as it doesn't involve personal attacks. I don't see anyone name calling or putting people down for their opinions, and overall I think the conversation here has been pretty civil.

    This is where I've settled on it too. The album used to be one of my absolute favorites when I first started getting into music, but it hasn't held up for me at all. Enema and TOYPAJ pretty clearly stand above the rest now imo.

    Maybe unpopular, but I think In With The Out Crowd, by Less Than Jake, is a fantastic album. I absolutely shit on it when it was first released, but it has aged SO well. Whatever your issues with the production sound are, try putting them aside & re-listening. As someone who has been a huge LTJ fan since 2000, I really find this to have some of their strongest material on it (especially the back half of the record). The songs translate much better live, as well.

    Never Trust A Hippy is the best NOFX release, and it's everything that's so great (and awful) about them distilled down into six songs, and has unfortunately been forgotten about since it's release. If you've never never heard NOFX before, it's a perfect 15 minute starter kit, as it ticks all their boxes;

    Fast and aggressive two minute punk songs with a keen sense of melody;
    Sardonic and silly political humour;
    "Serious" political content that's so ham-fisted and one sided it could almost be a parody;
    Songs about the punk scene, namechecking a hundred and one bands;
    Songs about getting hammered and taking drugs;
    "Sacrilegious" religious content, mocking religious figures and authority.

    You can listen to this record in 13 minutes, and once that 13 minutes is over, you'll know if you're a NOFX fan or not. It's just the perfect introduction to them, and is easily their best release as it's without filler. Dumb as hell, but an absolute riot to play through, and it seems a bit odd that it's basically a completely forgotten EP.

    I guess that's comes with the territory when you're as prolific as them!

    I was super into it for a while, too and it just hasn't held up for me either. Those songs I mentioned are ones I never skip when they come on, though.
