With regard to your last point, the probable reason California is comparatively meh to you and others is that, as the first release from the new lineup, they just played it safe. I'd expect them to do more than write run of the mill Blink sounding songs from here on. That said, I still don't think California is less engaging than they've been before.

Disagree that Hoppus and Skiba are better songwriters than Delonge. I'd say Tom and Matt are pretty much on the same level with Mark hanging out a bit below them.

Mark has written some of the best pop punk hooks ever though

I totally agree, just more recently (the last decade or so I guess) I think Matt and Tom have been the better songwriters.

I don't think Tom really has any good songwriting left in him. I know Matt's solo stuff with the Sekrets kills Tom's demos EP and his recent AVA stuff. Matt is nowhere near what he used to be at his peak, but still. And My Shame Is True was pretty good too.

See, I think Tom's most recent work is slightly better than Matt's (Sekrets, MSIT), other than his demo record I guess.

They should record with Terry Date.

I'm more of a Mark guy, always have been. I think Mark is a better songwriter than Tom. I guess it depends on what you're looking for with a song. If you want a feel good pop punk song than Mark is your man.

I mean in my opinion the stuff Mark wrote with blink from Buddha to Enema was better than Tom's songs, Mark carried blink in those years. TOYPAJ was when Tom finally started to match Mark's song writing in my eyes. To be fair to Tom, Box Car was a great album and I think Tom carried the Untitled album. I also enjoyed Tom's first two AVA albums but would still take +44 over them. I haven't really liked anything Tom has done with AVA since iEmpire and the only Tom only blink songs from Neighborhoods I like are Ghost, Wishing Well and Even If She Falls. I think Tom has taken a step back as a song writer from his peak, possibly because he doesn't have the same passion anymore.

I don't see how. One post is about the writing of lyrics, one post is about guitar riffs.... they're two different parts of the song.

You tried to argue blink is just as good as they have ever been in one post, and then stated you missed the catchy guitar riffs in the next. Not rocket science lol

Always been a Mark guy. I'm not going to deny that Tom has written a lot of great songs, but I've always been more drawn to Mark's lyrics and vocals.

....just as good as they have been when it comes to lyric writing. And they can still be good and still have a fault. I'll debate all day but don't pick words and phrases in selection from my posts to prove your point this isn't ala carte

If the riffs themselves aren't as good as in the past, the album can still be strong as a whole. Riffs didn't save Tom's dumpster fire of a demos EP.

I actually used to prefer Tom to Mark, while still liking both a great deal, up until about the reunion is about when I switched over. Mark just seemed so much more into it then Tom did, and then Tom started slipping in all musical fronts not just blink.

    I'm doing this...I prefer...

    Chesire: Tom > Mark
    Dude Ranch: Mark > Tom
    Enema: Tom > Mark
TOYPAJ: Mark > Tom....Shut Up, EILFY and Online Songs are:ok:
S/T: Travis > Mark and Tom. Barker's best work imo and really brings that album to life.
    Neighborhoods: Tom > Mark
    DED: Clearly Tom > Mark
    California: Skiba > Mark

and yes, we need a new song to marvel on.

Mark's contributions to Dude Ranch made me such a fan and I've never looked back. Damnit, Apple Shampoo, and Josie are pure 90s pop punk gold. Not for nothing but he also, in retrospect, wrote my three favorite Enema songs as well; Wendy Clear, Going Away to College, and Adam's Song (though at the time, 'All The Small Things' and 'What's My Age Again' were my favorite songs in the world haha) After Enema, with his foray into Boxcar Racer, I think Tom really began to hit his stride with his efforts culminating in the production of the Self Titled record, which never would have come to fruition had it not been for Tom's insistence. All in all though, Mark's contributions have had a greater impact in the grand scheme of things for me

Not at all. If you refer back to his original post he doesn't say anything about lyrics but just says "writing" where I come from guitar riffs are part of writing a song...

Ok? So the songs can be just as strong overall even in the absence of great riffs...

And if you refer to the topic I was replying to the topic was lyrics. You're reaching here.
