First time listening to it so I'm sure it'll change. I had only heard all of Pablo, Pool, OK Computer, and Kid A before today.

Who does everyone think is a better guitar player? Kirt Hammett or Eddie Van Halen?

 

Yeah, I could say that about a million other bands but someone brought up twenty one pilots so I shared my two cents.

I hate it when white dudes bite hard from rap while distancing themselves from and criticizing the racial and socioeconomic realities of the genre. For the same reason that I hate Lil Dicky's "I'm different from most rappers" bullshit, I dislike 21P cribbing elements of black art and repackaging them in some squeaky clean, Disney-approved vessel that takes shots at the genre itself. That song that mocks The Motto and has the "gangsters don't cry" bit is just pretentious, unnecessary, and imo, based in racial prejudice.

Their music is horrible, the main guy is the most obnoxious person to come out of the "scene" since Max Bemis, and I really dislike their "rap sucks! we're different! no one understands us! buy our t-shirts!" rhetoric.

 

Kirk hammett easy.

 

Now if I were matching up album to album it may be a different story, cuz VH s/t is solid gold.

 

Bolded was mostly what I was looking for. I've heard like three of their songs ever and don't follow their career/know what they're all about really, so my question was genuine because I have no idea haha. Other than hearing their name all the time they're pretty much totally off my radar.

I much prefer Kirk's style and back catalog but I'd have to say Eddie is the better guitar player.

 

I described The Bends recently as what Radiohead probably sounds like to someone who doesn't like Radiohead

 

lol yeah because I'd go for Kirt, just wanted to see what people thought since me and a friend argued about it the other night.

 

Van Halen for rhythm, Hammett for lead.

I feel like if we just compared Van Halen S/T and then II to the first two Metallica albums I may have to go Eddie, but overall I'd still go Kirt.

 

Eddie writes great riffs. I couldn't hum you a lick of any solo he ever wrote, "Eruption" included. Hammett is a flier, but does have a few melodies you can get stuck in your head.

 

Hammett definitely was the more experimental of the two.

 

No it's all good! If that's the narrative they're pushing then yeah I can definitely understand where you're coming from a little better and I would agree with you.

 

Also contributed the solo to "Beat It."

 

I remember liking Drops of Jupiter when I was like 10. 21 Pilots are stupid and Imagine Dragons is next level terrible

 

I honestly couldn't tell you a single song by Imagine Dragons or 21 Pilots.
