He played Letters in full tonight. Man, wish I had been there for that. Watching the video is pretty cool too though.

"It's that time of year again. Getting ready to press record again, on a new batch, and plan out another summer run."

Not sure if this is legit. Someone posted it in the "Butch Walker Stalkers" group on Facebook with a picture of a studio and said it was "From Butch," but I'm not sure where it came from. Not posted on any of his social accounts or anything. But there's a non-zero chance we'll be getting another new Butch album this year, apparently.

Huh. Seems weird. But I'm always hopeful

  13. I have no excuse for waiting this long to dive into Cassette Backs, but it's unsurprisingly excellent. I don't normally put too much time into b-sides/demos releases, but there are some great tracks on there, particularly the last three.

Hey everyone, I've been working to make an easily accessible list of Butch Walker Bootlegs. Here's the links to everything I've put up so far. But I'm always on the lookout for more, so if there's anything you've got to add, please send it my way and I'll get it added into the list. I

assume since the B-sides thread is welcome on this forum there's no issues with bootlegs being made available, but if there are I'll pull this post and just send it by request

Hi everyone... I'm here with a confession.

I just listened to Letters for the first time.

    What did you think?

Okay so let me provide some context. I loved She Likes Hair Bands and Be Good Until Then, but didn't really get around to checking out much more than just that album. Dug Canadian Ten as well.
I ignored the Spade but got really interested in Afraid of Ghosts largely because my dad was dying and I thought it would maybe speak to me and even be helpful. Side note: dad had surgery, pulled through and is doing a lot better!
I liked Afraid of Ghosts and bought Stay Gold. When I liked that one too I bought Letters and Sycamore Meadows. Six months or so later I had a road trip by myself and thought I'd give both a spin.

First impression was it sounded super slick and more pop-emo than I expected. It sounded very 2004 basically. By halfway through I thought it was catchy as hell and forgot about the sound/style. Joan was a nice change of pace and Best Thing You Never Had is an absolute showstopper. The closer, it stops for like 10 seconds and then a whole different song starts. So I was listening intently to see whether it was two parts of the same story.
Record ended and I played it twice more. Then I just played tracks 2, 3 and 10 on repeat until I knew all the words. Safe to say I'm going to end up really digging it.

Glad to hear your dad is doing better. I got an advance of Afraid of Ghosts maybe two or three months after my grandfather passed away, so that one has a place very near and dear to my heart.

It's definitely a slicker, more power-pop influenced record than a lot of his stuff. I've always thought it was comparable to Jack's Mannequin's Everything in Transit.

Those three tracks--"Maybe It's Just Me," "Mixtape," and "Best Thing"--are I think the ones that stood out the most to me on my first listen as well. "Mixtape" was probably the closest he ever came to having a hit.

These days, I tend to be partial to "Don't Move" and "Stateline" (the hidden track). I think those two have some of the best vocals he ever recorded. But I love the whole album so much, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks! Yeah I dug the whole thing (the rockabilly song might take a bit more to grow on me haha) those were just the ones I wanted to belt out the quickest.
I also listened to Sycamore Meadows but I feel like it was much less immediate. I'll wear Letters out and then revisit.

    @FurtherFromSky Moderator

The rockabilly one being "Race Cars and Goth Rock," I'm guessing?

I love Sycamore Meadows, but I feel like he overproduced it a little bit. The production doesn't suit the songs as well as it does on Letters.

I actually listened to Letters for the first time this fall after getting into Stay Gold.

That album was playing non stop all fall. Loved it a lot, especially Joan!

We're firmly into summer weather in Michigan, so it's time for Stay Gold to go back into constant rotation again.
