Uncharted 4 has basically the same story as National Treasure 2. Given that that is a game people like to hold up, I think that says something about the current state of the average big budget video game stories.

 

UC4 far exceeds national treasure as a story get out of here

 

Every medium has its limitations and benefits for telling stories and video games are no different.

 

San Andreas still might be my favorite story line.

Chrono Trigger has a great story with a number of different endings which is cool.

 

so from the looks of it, horizon zero dawn is the typical open world game formula, but the world/universe/story is so good that it makes up for that shortcoming.

 

It's like Robot Far Cry right, that's what it looks like

 

I'm a sucker for a game with a fun bow so Horizon looks like it's for me.

The robot dinos are a nice bonus.

are we just naming video games with good stories now? because uhh we're gonna be here for a while. I think we can just say "yeah that one guy is wrong about all games having bad stories" and move on.

I think the number you'll end up with is sobering. Look, I don't actualy think video game stories are bad, but a lot of them are, and most of the good ones aren't as consistently great as a lot of gamers think they are, at least if you use a frame of reference that includes other means of storytelling. HOWEVER, the interactivity can turn a mediocre story into a great experience in ways movies and books can't. Maybe that's just me though.

 

I also love the MK storyline. I love also that when the story got a little all over the place they creatively backtracked and re-wrote it.

 

I seriously want to get MK10 and Injustice 2 JUST for the story.

 

so ive been playing yakuza 0 (it being my first ever yakuza game) and its an absolute joy. Can't remember the last game I played that was this genuinely funny while also simultaneously being full of drama and emotion.

 

It pulls off such a great balance of having the main story be serious, dramatic and full of twists in a wonderfully over the top way combined with the often silly side content putting the main characters in ridiculous situations that make them even more endearing. Such a great series, I'm so glad Sega is going all in on bringing it over after the hiatus of a few years between 4 and 5.

 

the side quest about the kid getting his video game stolen is the greatest video game quest i've ever experienced ahaha.

also my main goal of 2017 is too now go through yakuza 1-5 in time to catch up with 6 coming out.

 

I'm really excited for the remake of 1 in the summer. They've added and improved the core formula so much over the series that the first game doesn't quite hold up as well compared to the rest of the series, despite the story being one of the most memorable. Having a more modern version of that game (and having it be tied closer to 0), especially after the strides they made with the gameplay in 0, is going to be a joy. 2 is my favorite in the franchise so I hope it gets a similar treatment eventually.

 

Video game stories will always hold up differently to movies/television/novels because...well...they aren't those things

Video game stories are the way they are because they're tailored for the fact that you're playing it out in video game form
