I adore this and stuff like this is why I call singers "musicians". I got into an argument with a friend once over whether or not Beyonce was a musician, and apparently a lot of people feel strongly that "musicians" have to literally play an instrument, not counting their voice.

 

Fall Out Boy's cover of Beat It is better than the original

....is the unpopular opinion of someone, somewhere out there. Not me though!

 

No matter how shitty a cover is, someone out there will claim it's better than the original. E.g. the comment section of any pop goes punk song

one of the worst arguments for singers not being musicians is that singers dont write their own stuff when well, a lot of them do write or co-write, but nevermind that, people who play in an orchestra arent writing what they're playing but no one would deny their skill

 

I generally hate when people act like pop music doesn't require talent, try writing a song that catchy

 

I have tried, and continue to try. Writing a good, catchy hook is very hard.

 

There's a reason certain people work in the industry as songwriters for labels. They have a talent at writing something catchy. Even the Taylor Swifts that do write their own stuff are working with those writing teams and producing great content. At the level, it's really more like the tin pan alley era where entertainers sang and performed. Nothing wrong with that.

 

People think it's so easy then try to write something and they make something terrible that sounds like brokencyde or some shit and are like "see? that was easy" and it's like how can you not see the difference between what you did and top quality pop lol

 

The new Japandroids album is pretty boring.

 

I am a sucker for a lot of '80s pop music because I just think the hooks are catchy. Yeah, it's on the opposite end of my punk, hardcore, and metal enjoyment, but the goal/intent is completely different. Some people can't or don't want to separate the different approaches.

Speaking of brokencyde, is that not one of the more embarrassing eras looking back? I listened to some of the Senses Fail type stuff, but when it spawned into plug and chug derivative metalcore and hip hop, it became pretty laughable imo.

Agreed. Threw it on while cooking last weekend. Ended up just throwing on a podcast two songs in.

You cede your right to call an entire album boring if you don't listen to it all the way at least once. Gotta give any album a fair shot.

We were driving to Cafe Brazil and I plugged my phone in and Laura was like "Is this that Jake?" and I was just like "Yeah listen to this, listen to this synth about to come in listen to this chord shift etc etc" the whole drive because I'm a huge nerd

 

More than one listen for me, it takes me several listens to process music which makes it hard for me to get into music
