  4. This is like when the Mensheviks boycotted the Russian Social Democrat Party meeting so the Bolsheviks declared a quorum without them and remade the party in their image despite actually being a minority

One would think it occurs to people that perhaps we need to dispense with the document that literally enshrined the sale of people.

  7. would one really think that though

I mean, are we really surprised that they changed the panel rules? It just means the stakes are higher for Dems to all vote no and make the GOP and Trump own these terrible appointments and the fallout from the changes in policy over the next few years. Obstruct, protest, and vote against their agenda from start to finish.

Haha. Good point. I really wish the radical republicans had torn it up during reconstruction.

And honestly, I think if the Reconstruction had not been defeated, had been more thorough, we'd likely have a broader left-wing history and may not have been defeated in the '70's.

These people in the Indivisible Charleston group I joined think we can still play by the old rules...

They are debating whether Democrats should oppose the SCOTUS pick or not. Some of the arguments:

"Honestly, I think the Dems need to just take the SCOTUS nominee on the chin. He seems to be a solid conservative choice and dragging it out just makes the Dems look petulant (like the republicans did with blocking Obamas nomination). We knew this election included a slot on SCOTUS and thats just the consequence of losing. At least he didnt nominate his cleaning lady like bush or a syncophant like his cabinet picks. I feel like the GOP intentionally chose this one for him (a well spoken non zealot) to make the Dems hang themselves by opposing him. You cant play checkers when the other guys are playing chess."

"Fighting battles you cannot win even if in the right isnt going to accomplish any goals. Im all for going toe to toe with no holds barred against these fuckers when it is winnable or at least can score points towards public perception and lead to midterm wins (like Orangealinis cabinet picks and this racist immigration ban). This one is a very well laid trap by the GOP and I think we are walking into it."

" Agree but the only way to turn the tide is to pick the proper battles. This isnt the one, no matter how critical that SCOTUS seat is, we arent going to score anything by a lengthy filibuster. People who read breitbart are a lost cause. We can overcome them. It is the swing state voters and reasonable reagan republicans we have to deal with"

"Sessions and those nominates are the battles we can win. We cant win this one. Everyone has the right to be angry over this stolen seat. That anger needs to be directed where it matters and can actually swing things to the left. We have to fight, but on our chosen fields not theirs. They chose this guy specifically so they can control the fight. Dont fall into it."

"Maybe let this guy through, but if Kennedy retires, or god forbid we lose anyone else, OBSTRUCT OBSTRUCT OBSTRUCT. We CANNOT lose another Justice to the dark side."

"As irritated as I am at the Republicans for stonewalling the last eight years as much as they could, I think we need to pick our battles right now. Especially if our goal is to flip the House and the Senate and the presidency as soon as we can.

And as outrageous as Trump is, this judge took a vow to defend the Constitution when he was sworn in as an attorney to begin with. I may not agree with which way he leans but he does have a long history of doing his job fairly well. He has a history of being approachable and he has a tendency to favor defendants in criminal cases. While I do not agree with him on citing religious freedoms with the Hobby Lobby case I do think he is a reasonable judge. I think that while he himself is a conservative he does make an effort to be objective in all of his rulings."

These are people that ostensibly joined a Facebook group to oppose Trump and they want to roll over and "pick our battles". It's incredible. As if the Republicans got together and had an ideological debate on whether or not they would oppose Garland. They were united in their opposition, regardless of what the other party did. Meanwhile, we're over here debating when and what we should fight. Hopefully elsewhere in the country there's a different story playing out.

I know this crowd isn't traditionally big on the second ammendment, but I think it might be prudent (strictly for the purpose of self defense) for everyone to familiarize themselves with firearm safety, maintenence, and marksmanship sometime in the near future.

Not saying they will, but things could get really bad, really fast, thanks to the surveillance state, drone warfare, the prison industrial complex, etc.
