I don't know that anyone really cares, honestly. Even the people who know what it is are probably so fed up with "government getting nothing done" that they'd probably be glad to get rid of it. I'd imagine most people don't understand that the reason we have it is so that the minority party doesn't get steamrolled, and that the Senate was always intended to move at a glacial pace compared to the House, so it won't be too much of an issue. Plus, like I said above, even if people do wind up caring, with Trump constantly changing the headlines I think it would get drowned out and not matter much.

Honest question, why do republicans get to screw people out of voting for the opposing party in districts but dems don't? Is it just based on targeting?

Even the much-vaunted Founding Fathers knew the document's flaws. Jefferson wanted it ripped up and re-written every ten years for fuck's sake. Never hear that tidbit coming from the mouths of the "Originalists" out there, though.

We need to switch to a Parliamentary system in the worst way imaginable.

  19. It is honestly ridiculous the reverence we have toward this document. I understand how and why it developed into a "sacred" document - there's a great book on that and the uniqueness of American Civil Religion by Pauline Maier called "Dusting Off The Declaration" that I highly recommend to everyone - but I think what people don't realize is how fucking old it is. There's this tendency to view the US as a relatively young nation when compared to Europe, but take France, for example. Since 1776, France has gone through like 5 constitutions corresponding to 4 or 5 republics, and in between those have gone through, what, 3 different iterations of a French Empire. If France had gone through a world-shattering war like the American Civil War over the political system of the nation-state, they wouldn't have thought twice about tearing up the constitution and writing a completely new one. But we have to amend the original. It's kinda fucked. We're a young geopolitical entity in a lot of ways but we were also perhaps the first genuine nation state (as opposed to other conceptions of what makes borders, like those applied to a Kingdom or Empire).

A parliamentary system also eliminates the concept and stigma of "third parties." There would only be "parties."
