I think the drums are really loud on here.

 

Like on 'The Bars' in the middle when it kicks back in they sound great. The snare sticks out on 'After The Party' too but the rest of the drums don't and the cymbal hits don't sound as good to the ear. I'm probably really bad at wording it but I felt the production on especially Impossible Past made every hit of the drum kit clear as day and as loud as ever. It's here at points but not at all in the way I expected so I guess I feel a bit of adjusting to this style that's been applied but that sort of marriage of production of drums and how clear they were before ('Ava House' is the prime example of what I mean) isn't there for me.

 

Still holding out till Friday to listen. The hype in here has me stoked, but doing my run through the Menz discography this week and listening to Chamberlain Waits today, this is gonna have to be phenomenal to even surpass CW as my #2 Menz album.

 

Started listening to this band this week.
Love half of OTIP. Really couldn't get into RW..yet.

With that said. The 4 songs released have been on repeat.
Can't wait until Friday. Am officially understanding why this band is so adored.

 

RW takes a lot longer to get into imo, it took me a year before I really got that album - just concentrate on the good songs/what you liked about the album then the rest comes naturally.

 

This is hitting me extremely hard. "Midwestern States" and "Lookers" feel like songs written about the last 2 years of my life

 

I think this is their best album in terms of mixing honestly, which is surprising because I've felt the opposite about a few albums Will Yip has been involved in.

 

Yep major THS vibes. On a semi-related note I always felt that Annina, We Will Miss You by Captain, We're Sinking is at least a vague tribute to Craig's "Holly" character.

Tellin' Lies is my favorite so far, hits home. I'm 32, divorced, and all the bars seem either too young or too dead.

 

Your Wild Years is just a fucking fantastic song. I just connect to it in so many ways. The way Greg writes songs and how cathartic it is you just connect with the songs, especially being from the northeast. I've spent numerous nights at them wonder bar, stone pony, and live in Boston. It just adds a whole new level listening to it.

 

When I discovered OTIP in 2013, I was pretty much binge drinking every weekend with my friends at hole in the wall pubs that played bands like The Lawrence Arms, Hot Water Music and Bad Religion, so lyrically, it was so fucking relevant to my life. Also the fact that I fell for a waitress and ended up dating her that year.

 

Originally from Jersey, moved to Philly, and spent 2 years in Boston. This is so fucking true. Like these moments he describes I understand and empathize completely.

 

I feel this so hard. Gonna be a bit before I can listen to that entire album.

My ex is a waitress, we met at a party, she wore a blue dress a lot, would cut my hair, same cigarettes, lived on Sawmill road, from the Philly metro, and go ahead and guess her name.

 

Insane dude. I think these guys can just write lyrics that encapsulate the struggles, triumphs and ins and outs of being a dude in your mid-twenties. The parties, the drinks, the girls. They just get it.

Blink spoke to me the same way when I was 13-18. It's good to have a band that speaks to every chapter of my life, haha.

 

The second verse of Midwestern States and the second verse of Your Wild Years hit the hardest. Greg's ability to mix in really poetic lyrics with lines about watching shitty Netflix shows is something that you don't see in a lot of songwriters, usually it's one or the other.

 

Justin Pierre from Motion City Soundtrack was good at this. But you're right, there's not that many out there.

 

"We stayed in your adolescent room, rummaged through boxes labeled 'former you'"

Another reference to Nothing Feels Good Anymore: "as the image of a former you, searching every nook and every cranny for the form that I'm taking"

 

has anyone picked up on any other past references?

Not exactly a past reference but the line "Long for the words with hearts and wings" appears on both The Wild Years and Livin Aint Easy.

I feel like I definitely remember hearing at least one or two clear past references but they're not coming to mind

 

Are all the lyrics to this available somewhere yet? I keep checking genius to no avail. I really want to sit and read along to see if the tracks that haven't clicked yet hit.

 

Haven't found them yet, just using what is on Genius.

Glad I was able to make out Charlie's Army -- the "day drinking in Brooklyn" part is the catchiest moment on the album but it took me a while to figure out what the hell he was saying

 

Isn't it crazy to listen to an album that perceives exactly your life? Just so many moments in these places and you connect 100% to it. I haven't listened to an album ever that fits perfectly with those moments.

 

I'm gonna be in Boston :( me and my gf are gutted we can't go

 

Went down to the beach with my buddy to catch the sunset. We had some beers, reminisced on our lives up to this point (turning age 30), and geeked out over 'After the Party' all while it was playing. I recommend you do the same or something similar.

 

I'm so glad I didn't drain Lookers when it was released. It may be my favourite, so hard to choose though!
