Manchester was fine but this better win the Oscar

 

finally getting to see this. I thought i was going to be the only one in here but a couple of people just walked in.

 

Agreed, far more important film too.

 

i can't stop thinking about this. the scene with little and juan absolutely destroyed me.

 

This was great and deserving of all its praise. Powerful storytelling.

 

Wow. What a movie. Definitely deserves to win all the awards.

 

I dunno exactly how I felt about this movie as a whole but the scene where little and Juan are in the ocean fucking dismantled me.

 

Haven't seen or heard of a lot of these, but I enjoyed watching Barry Jenkins nerd out over his inspirations.

 

I went to see this again because I had four hours of downtime before I had to go back to work. It is still great, obviously, but my favorite part was at the very end of the movie when a very elderly man exclaimed "what the hell kind of movie was that!?"

 

Sitting behind me was a group that consisted of an elderly couple, a young boy who was maybe 8, and a woman who I presume was his mother. If I was an 8 year old boy sitting between my mom and my grandparents during that handjob scene I don't think I'd recover lol. I'm not opposed to allowing your kids to see adult content, it's not like its pornographic, but I just want to know the thought process behind bringing your kid to this. I would have been pretty bored as a kid, I feel.

 

It is very obvious that a lot of the people in the audience did not know a single thing about the movie except that it was nominated for Academy Awards. My mother quizzed me on every movie when she saw the nominees. For some people, that is their filter.

 

Phenomenal. My favorite of 2016.

 

Just saw it today and loved it. Really happy I saw it in theaters, the highest compliment I can give it is that it looks incredible. Only minor complaint I have is that I wish it would've kept going for another 15 minutes or so after where it ends, but even then, I did like the way it ultimately closes - just not what I expected. Still a great movie and definitely one of my favorites of 2016.

 

My best was a man (he was alone) who shouted "Rubbish" at the end of Knight of Cups.

 

There was a couple that wouldn't stop fucking whispering during my screening and I almost shushed them but didn't want to ruin the movie.

When the bully was picking on him during the middle, I heard the guy whisper under his breath, "Yo, stomp his ass, man..."

 

im glad i decided to see this after class late night in the city (i like seeing good movies in nyc if i can)...

this was obviously great but it will take me a while to consider HOW great. I don't think it's tree of life level and I think the 3rd act dragged a bit for my liking, but it's still a very memorable film.

I'm really big on atmosphere and walking back to my car in new york after this, i definitely had a lot of feels the whole time. Whenever a movie can transform your perspective as you walk to the car, is a pretty powerful film.

 

Can't stop thinking about how good it was

 

For some reason, and I can't really articulate why, but the 3rd act kind of loses me. Not saying it's bad, I was still invested and I enjoyed it, but compared to the first two acts I thought it was lacking. guess I felt like I didn't really get to know Chiron as an adult all that much.

 

I wanted a little more from the final act, particularly at the end there, but I still found it very emotional and moving.

 

The third act has the scene with his mom and the diner scene and the final shot. I don't know how much closer to perfect it could be.

 

Agreed. The entire diner sequence may be my favorite part of the movie.

 

yeah i'm in the same boat. The diner scene was great, but i think what made the whole 3rd act seem draggy to me was that it was a much slower pace than the previous two. There wasn't anything quite like the diner scene UNTIL the diner scene.

 

The final sequence is one long closing act, giving us a sense of redemption and hope for Chiron after he was in his worst situation at the end of the second. It is not as engaging as the first (which is arguably perfect), but we start the third act expecting the worse from Chiron when we see his lifestyle, appearance, and career only to see him arguably even more vulnerable.

 

The gradual letting down of his guard throughout the diner scene and into Kevin's place was played so well. Trevante Rhodes is really talented.
