How can you be this rude constantly and then turn around and complain about how people behave?

Just came in to say that Henson and Monae got robbed. All three killed it in Hidden Figures.

I'll check it out. He's one of the main reasons why I love film, and his tireless crusades for film preservation and shooting on film have made him a hero on top of the brilliance of his films. A true legend and, yes, we are so lucky to have him.

Once it got shortlisted for Makeup & Hairstyling I really thought it had a shot. They went with Suicide Squad instead, clearly, which was a flashier film in that department to be fair. And while I really enjoyed Deadpool, neither film deserves any Oscar nominations if I'm being totally honest.

There are a lot of people who make the argument that the Oscars should nominate movies like Deadpool because they are popular and will increase ratings. It would be like the MTV Movie Awards all over again.

Yeah Pharrell was totally snubbed, even his much-discussed collaborative score with Hans Zimmer. And in favor of goddamn Passengers too, of all films. Like wtf.

Oh I get it, I'm being ignorant as all hell. I just don't like musicals, especially those about Hollywood.

To be fair, Gibson has made some epic movies, personal feelings about him aside, you can't deny that.

Also Hacksaw Ridge was great but not best director/actor great. Guess Mel's fully back in the club

He made Braveheart, which is an enjoyable historical epic and is really well-done. But since then he's made . . . what? Other than a long and ever-increasing resume of reprehensible behavior, of course.

Not interested in a Mel Gibson comeback. Hacksaw Ridge dripped with his xenophobia and devout Christianity, and while religious imagery and conviction isn't a bad thing in and of itself in a movie, Gibson adheres too much to his devoutness and it holds his movie back. Same problem Nate Parker had with Birth of a Nation.

Love a lot of these movies. Jungle Book should win best effects hands down. Fences, Hell or Highwater and Hacksaw deserve their noms for sure. Surprised Gibson was nominated for Director though given his history. He may be a terrible person, but man can he direct. Also happy Shannon got best supporting actor, he was maybe the only really good part of Nocturnal Animals.

But SS was nominated for best makeup and hairstyling....I mean, take out the one character you didn't like (I still think Joker was fine), the other 20 characters looked good. This movie deserves it just for what they did to Killer Croc alone when they could have gone CGI.

So many of these movies were critically acclaimed, so how so? So many good movies on here and you said you only saw 3, do you purposely avoid movies that are getting talked about to seek out the most indie/unheard of film? I only ask because you seem to be such a big film buff.

Passion of the Christ was also really well done, but obviously controversial.

I get what you're saying, though. I prefer him as an actor over a director.

Not really a spoiler: Anyone know if the guy going back for Doss' bible really happened? Because that was the biggest GodGodGod moment in the whole thing imo, and bothered me only because it seemed...extreme. To go back under fire for it.

Edit: don't get really high and the go see passion of the christ. Good movie, a little intense lol

I don't think Hacksaw Ridge is a good movie. It has good aspects, and however much of a despicable person Gibson is he has talent as a filmmaker. But Hacksaw doesn't land for me.

The biggest problem is that he isn't even contrite or humble about anything. He's an entitled prick who feels like his horrible behavior got him unfairly ostracized. Have you read any of his interviews from the Hacksaw Ridge press cycle? Check out this actual quote:

"'People are tired of petty grudges about nothing. About somebody having a nervous breakdown (after) double tequilas in the back of a police car,' the star said, now sober. 'Regrettable. I’ve made my apologies, I’ve done my bit. Moved along. Ten years later. Big deal.'”*

*(emphasis added by me because holy shit, someone with his past actually believes this stuff and I don't know what to do with that information)

I try to watch movies that look like they would be good. Most of these movies did not make the major year-end critics' list that I used to finish up seeing the essential films of the year, which is always a red flag because those critics tend to overrepresent mainstream American films. To follow up on what someone said earlier, if you look at nominees from most years they are the big American critical favorites you expect. Last year all of those films that I had already seen or had already been planning on seeing.

Glad somebody feels the same, haha. I've seen it three times in theaters and I still want to see it again - I just can't get enough of it.
