Lucas Hedges!!!!!

 

Highly diverse group of nominees. Mel Gibson is kind of a black eye on the proceedings, though. And Elle not getting a Best Foreign Language Film nomination is crazy.

 

Yeah, I guess without a new Transformers film this year Suicide Squad is the requisite dumpster fire film that sneaks into one of the technical categories and becomes Oscar-nominated.

 

Largely pretty boring nominees. Moonlight and Manchester remain ahead of everything else nominated by a large margin.

I know the sound awards always go to the big blockbusters, but films like Silence and Moonlight do way more artful things with sound than something like Rogue One.

Criminal that nothing from Popstar or Sing Street could make its way into Best Original Song.

Very cool for Kenneth Lonergan and Barry Jenkins. Andrew Garfield was better in Silence than in Hacksaw Ridge, which isn't a terrible movie but is so heavy handed in its religious imagery and reverence for its lead that Gibson doesn't do much interesting stuff with an interesting story. Supporting actress nominees are great.

 

Ugh I hope La La Land doesn't upset La La Land for best original song!

 

Cool for A24 that the Lobster, 20th Century Women, and Moonlight all got noms. Too bad the Witch, Green Room, and Swiss Army Man, as good or better than their nominated movies, couldn't make their way in there.

 

La La Land had the most nominations?

 

Seriously, wtf. Especially Sing Street.

 

He means in terms of quality.

 

Yeah. That's ridiculous.

 

Ah. That's fair. I still need to see those two.

 

If one of them has to win I hope it's the Audition song. "City of Stars" is like a nothing song. But my personal choice is "How Far I'll Go." Classic Disney in all the right ways and will also help Lin-Manuel Miranda on his way to EGOT.

 

I meant in terms of actually being quality movies. They're a lot better than everything else that got a nomination, except Silence, maybe, but that only got one for cinematography.

 

Would love for them to split Best Picture and Director this year and give director to Barry Jenkins. I know there's no way this Academy gives Moonlight Best Picture, because La La Land is just too self-indulgent for them to pass up. But Jenkins deserves it.

 

Adam Driver was never going to get a nom for Paterson but having just seen it, he's just fantastic in it. A beautiful, earnest, nuanced performance. I haven't seen Captain Fantastic but he'd definitely deserve it over Garfield in Hacksaw Ridge and Gosling in La La Land.

 

When they said Garfield's name I was hoping like hell it was for Silence but I should've known better. He was fantastic in Silence.

 

Bummer that the stunning score from Jackie has to go up against La La Land. Moonlight's score is gorgeous too, but Jackie's is quite striking.

 

Two good movies were nominated. At least that is something.

 

Hell or High Water baffles me, where did that film come from? Did it get a wide release? Did it get press? I assumed it was a straight to VOD movie when it popped up on IPT months ago. Still need to watch it

 

Are there usually 9 different nominations for Best Picture? I thought it was usually capped at 6 or 7

9 has been the usual number, but they're allowed anywhere between 5 and 10 as of, I believe, 2009.
