They tested in developer mode because their test is automated and just loads the same web pages over and over, which after the first time it hits the page would just load from cache every time, greatly decreasing effect on battery life. while turning the cache off completely also isn't realistic it's closer to reality as even pages you load every day like twitter and facebook still have new information they need to download in the form of new posts.

Chrome is also not garbage by any stretch, it's the most standard compliant browser and is in my opinion still the best overall user experince. Safari's advantage in battery life is well known but that's about all it's has.

  2. The bug was apparently an icon cache issue and fixed.

I knew someone would take issue with that statement, ha.

I think Chrome is just gross overall. Through Safari extensions I can add stuff like ad blockers and the mini 1Password widget, which is really all I need as far as "extra" stuff goes. Plus having native support for things like handoff and reading list is great. I'm aware Chrome has their own version of that stuff, it's just not for me. Then you throw in the performance factor and it's not even close.

I'm not sure what "performance" you're talking about considering Chrome is the faster and more compliant browser on equal hardware. Safari's battery and memory usage advantage come at a cost, it's more aggressive on loading assests of cache which reduces ram usage but also makes it slower overall, and Safari prioritizes energy consumption over all else which is excellent to get that extra hour out of your battery but makes it generally slower overall. I use Safari when my battery starts to get low but Chrome otherwise.

Anyone familiar with Migration Assistant? I'm going from windows to Mac, and my Mac is getting stuck on the screen where I verify the codes. I can continue with Windows but the Continue button is never activated on Mac, before and after I click continue on Windows.

Edit: Tried restarting the application, now my Mac can see my windows but when I click continue on my Mac to get to the codes, it fails to connect. Could this just be a shitty internet problem?

To each their own :upside:. Chrome will just never have the attention to detail that Safari does as far as integrating with the OS and hardware (for obvious reasons). Safari tabs show up individually within Activity Monitor for example, that's incredibly helpful. Chrome just shows as one app/object. I will personally take the browser that extends my battery, reduces memory usage, prevents flash by default, and certainly the browser that is less concerned about collecting data from me over the one that gives me a slight speed bump. Just seems like a lot to compromise (to me) for saving maybe a minute or two of loading pages per day. I'll get those minutes back with Overcast and smart speed, ha.

I am by no means trying to sell you on Safari. I am well aware of the browser turf wars. I've been writing code for several years and definitely in the minority of that community as far as using Safari goes. I get it.

  7. I just like the reading mode or whatever in safari. Is there a mode like that in chrome? Cause that's the biggest reason as to why I use safari. safari normally slows down really bad for me if I have multiple tabs open when I'm writing a paper.

I also use safari cause I use it on my phone as well. I don't care for chrome on iOS for some reason

  8. Do you like it?

I've only used it for a few hours but other than my issue above, yes. I'm sure the first time I see someone with a touchbar MBP in the wild, I'll be pretty jealous but overall I'm comfortable with my purchase.

  10. I personally wish Chrome didn't change their look every few months while adding more bloated garbage into their now weirdly angular and out of place interface. Being able to keep Safari minimal was enough for me to stay with it. Plus the integrations with iOS make it even more appealing.

  11. The integrations with iOS are the reason I use it for sure

Besides being able to open tabs from the other what integration does it have?

Is it possible to use my MacBook's speakers as external speakers for another device? I have a record player that has an aux port and I want to use an aux cord to connect the record player to my MacBook and play the audio from the record player through my MacBook's speakers.

I don't understand why people spend money on record players and then try to do weird stuff like this for speakers.

i have no clue but that would be cool to use. I have a record player right now but my stereo and such isn't working at the moment. I don't know anything about this but this link might help..? Connect your Mac to a home stereo, iPod, iPad, musical instruments, or speakers

  18. I just like having my history from my phone also on my mac. And all my bookmarks are there automatically and everything. It's just simple, that's why I like it

I know you weren't trying to be rude but I didn't buy this record player, it was a gift a few years ago and the built in speakers aren't great. I recently pulled it back out and the speaker I was using with it conked out and while Amazon is replacing it I thought I would use my MacBook's speakers. It's a 2016 touch bar and the speakers are great so I just wanted to see if it would work.

  20. I use 1Blocker to keep comments and gross stuff off as well. So that works together as well as saved history/passwords/bookmarks. And being able to customize the Mac interface so that the buttons I want are where I want them is so nice.
